When change decisions are made without our input or involvement, one of two things can happen:

Ø We assume the best of intentions, keep an open mind, and remain in a state of readiness
Ø We make assumptions, take it personal, and enter a state of resistance

Think about the most recent change in your workplace. If you were not involved in the decision, how did you react when you learned what was going to happen?

If your natural tendency is to become critical of decisions made without your input, reframe your experience by assuming the best. It will transform how you think, interact, and communicate, and set you apart as a leader of people, projects, and organizational change.

The first step in preparing for organizational change is to prepare yourself for the transition.

Creating a pros and cons list is one way to kickstart the change planning process on a more personal level. Not only can it surface "hidden" concerns and possibilities, but it also helps to develop empathy for your fellow humans (aka stakeholders), which can influence your change management strategy and approach.

If you lead a team, a pros and cons list can be a useful tool for overcoming perceived barriers and bottlenecks that may be holding people back from adopting and sustaining the new behaviors and norms.

Have you tried using a pros and cons list before? If so, how did it go?

When it comes to leading people, projects, and organizational change, trust is essential.

Trust is also necessary when removing barriers, breaking down silos, and ending patterns that contribute to toxic cultures.

Credibility is foundational to building trust at work. What does it mean to be credible? It means doing what you say you will do, being consistent, and behaving in alignment with your core values.

Connection is the next step in building trust at work. What does it mean to connect with others? It means getting to know your colleagues, caring about their well-being, and being a team player.

Emotional control is important when it comes to building trust at work. What does it mean to have emotional control? It means not rushing to judgment, waiting to respond, and taking responsibility for how your words and actions affect others.

Competency is critical to build trust at work, but the most dynamic, influential leaders recognize their expertise isn't the starting point. In fact, leaders who invert the pyramid end up building fear-based cultures where trust is low, internal competition is high, and innovation fails to stick.

What would you add as a key ingredient to building trust at work?

Apogy is pleased to welcome Kerri Weaver to the Change Leader Speaker Series! Kerri is a change management expert with extensive experience leading change initiatives at the team and enterprise level. Recently, she was tapped by her leadership team to build out the company's Center of Excellence (CoE) and Community of Practice, which included developing the process, standards, and tools for implementing organizational change.

In this engaging conversation, Kerri and Jessica Crow, Apogy's founder who also helped coach Kerri through the process, discuss best practices for starting a hybrid change management function, getting executive buy-in for the model and expectations, and developing tools that can be easily used by others when the centralized team is unable to support the change effort.

Highlights from the interview include: Kerri’s recommendations on how to make progress getting a CoE off the ground; the importance of storytelling when leading organizational change; why change management skills are useful in any role; and, how to overcome information overload so you can take action, get some wins, and build momentum for your ideas and initiatives.

Thank you, Kerri, for your kindness, optimism, and advice. If you are forming a change function, be sure to check this video out and learn from Kerri!

Many change leaders ask: how do I lead change when I don't have the right title or authority?

Effectively leading people through a change transition, getting buy-in for your change initiative, or successfully advancing your ideas for change - does not require a VP title or accountability for a budget or P+L.

What it does require is trust based on your credibility, a solid internal network, and the confidence that comes from making choices and decisions that are in alignment with your core values.

Gratitude is one of many ways to boost employee well-being in the workplace.

The benefits of practicing gratitude also help employees better navigate change and uncertainty when it strikes.

Gratitude, particularly in the form of recognition, can be transformative during change initiatives and inspire others into action. It can also support a mindset shift from apathy and resistance to one of curiosity. Individuals may be able to reframe their resistance and ask themselves, “what can I learn from this?”

Learn how Change Leaders can incorporate more moments of gratitude into change initiatives in our latest post!

Apogy is pleased to welcome Jennifer Thompson, Principal Consultant at ViTL Solutions, to the Change Leader Speaker Series!

In this informative conversation, Jen and Apogy founder Jessica Crow discuss the importance of learning and how developing skills in “adjacent” practices can increase your effectiveness as a leader of people, projects, and organizational change.

Highlights from the conversation include: the parallels between project and change management; the importance of written and verbal communication; her thoughts on whether change management should be a standalone function or integrated within teams; and the one thing she wishes all change managers would do to help the c-suite understand the value of change management.
