This is Nonsense
“LONI SPEAKS”

“Why should I care about this community?”

I heard those words recently, and they broke my heart.

Not because the question is new, but because of what it reveals about where we are. That question is not neutral. It is not curious. It is not philosophical. It is a fracture. A signal that something in us has shifted from we to me, from responsibility to retreat.

I remember the first time I read Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community? by Martin Luther King Jr,.

The title alone felt prophetic. I remember thinking, we have entered the chaos he warned us about. Not chaos as noise - but chaos as erosion. Chaos in our hearts. Chaos in our homes. Chaos in our workplaces. Chaos in our government. Even chaos in our churches and religious institutions.

Dr. King understood something we seem determined to forget: chaos does not arrive all at once.

It arrives when people stop caring for one another. When inconvenience in our own lives outweighs compassion. When belonging is replaced by boundaries.

Living in the Moment…Are you ready for 2026?

What are you doing right now… in this moment?

Not what’s next.
Not what you should be doing.
But this moment.

Think About it Tuesday...

As we approach this holy season, take some time to reflect on the world around us and what's happening. If you have a moment, read my latest Substack article to help you gain perspective about working and advocating together in 2026...

One for All...All for One
"Advocacy belongs to all of us."

There’s a reason this phrase has endured. It reminds us that what touches one community eventually touches us all. And right now, the through-line across our biggest advocacy issues is painfully clear: when rights are weakened anywhere, they’re weakened everywhere. What affects one of us… affects all of us. Like it or not, we are all connected.

And right now is not a moment for siloed outrage. It’s not a moment to pick and choose your cause. It’s a moment for collective attention.

Let’s talk about what’s happening in our country today and why all of it should matter to every one of us.

Civil Liberties: The Ground Is Shifting
The courts are not operating in a vacuum. Decisions coming out of the Supreme Court of the United States, on issues ranging from privacy and national security to immigration and transgender rights, are quietly redrawing the boundaries of personal freedom.

The American Civil Liberties Union has been sounding the alarm, particularly as the Court weighs cases involving conversion therapy bans and religious charter schools. These aren’t niche legal debates. They are foundational questions about who gets protected, who gets excluded, and whose identity the law recognizes as legitimate.

When civil liberties become conditional, everyone’s freedom is negotiable.

Sunday Stories:
Where We Are Going...And how do we get there?"

Poem
”We are standing at the edge of who we’ve been.
Grief behind us, possibility ahead.
The world keeps asking what we’re willing to lose to feel powerful.
I’m asking what we’re willing to protect to remain human.” - Loni

As I write this, my heart is heavy.
News of the shooting at Brown University has settled into my spirit, not as a headline, but as a wound. Another campus. Another moment where fear entered a space meant for learning, safety, and becoming. Another reminder that violence has learned how to move quietly through places we once believed were sacred.

And sacred places are no longer sacred…As I write this, news of the mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach comes across my computer.

All of this at the same time, I am preparing to get my granddaughter from her university so we can head home for Christmas.

That dissonance - that unbearable closeness between public tragedy and private love - is where this Sunday story lives.

Some people resist positive change because growth exposes the work they’ve avoided.
That fear turns into negativity, gossip, and pushback.

Leaders can guide. Leaders can support.
But leaders cannot make someone grow.

At some point, they must choose:
- Get on the bus and learn
or
- Step off at the next stop

Because your culture matters too much to be held hostage by fear.

Sunday Stories
Becoming The You That You Forgot
by Loni Speaks

This morning, before the emails and the noise, I sat with myself.
No title.
No to-do list.
No expectations.
Just me.
Just breath.
Just truth.
I wrote a question at the top of my journal:
“Who am I becoming… and who did I lose on the way here?”

Because somewhere between life’s demands, the masks we wear, and the roles we’re praised for, we forget the parts of ourselves that once felt undeniable.

The parts that made us bold.
The parts that made us tender.
The parts that made us… us.
Becoming isn’t just forward motion.
It’s excavation.

It’s digging beneath the version of you the world trained you to be,
so you can reclaim the version of you that God intended.
Leadership didn’t teach me this.
Life did.
Grief did.
Mistakes did.
Silence did.
And sitting with myself this morning, I realized something:
We talk a lot about growth, but rarely about returning.
Returning to truth.
Returning to joy.
Returning to balance.
Returning to the girl or woman we abandoned to survive someone else’s storyline.

That’s the real becoming.
Not polishing what’s broken.
Not pretending the cracks don’t exist.
But honoring who you are underneath the fractures.

So today, I’ll ask you what I asked myself:
What part of you is ready to come back home?
What truth have you outgrown your fear enough to face?
Who are you becoming - on purpose?
This is your work.
This is your return.
This is your story.

And unfortunately DC will look like it’s this horrible crime ridden mostly black city - when the shooter is actually an Afghan national who lived in Washington State (that’s near Oregon for the geographically challenged), and travelled across the country to do this. The question is why? Was it because there were no incidents happening in any of the urban cities where the National Guard had been dispatched.

Three gunshot victims were taken to the hospital after the shooting in downtown Washington.

I woke up this morning grateful. But, not the soft kind of gratitude we whisper in passing, but the bone-deep, soul-steadying gratitude that reminds me what a privilege it is to do the work I do.

I am proud to lead. Proud to advocate. Proud to stand in the gap for communities that are too often underserved, marginalized, and dismissed.

Every day, I get to put my hands on work that matters, work that lets people feel seen, valued, and protected. And that is the kind of gratitude that reshapes a life.

Leadership, at its core, is a thank-you note to humanity.

And, it’s my responsibility, and my joy to ensure that diversity isn’t simply a checkbox in our organizations but the lifeblood that makes them breathe. That equity becomes more than policy - it becomes a promise. And that inclusion is not the side door we open occasionally, but the front door that never closes.

My voice exists for good. My presence exists for change.

And love… well love is the superpower I lead with.

Because every day I challenge myself to leave the world better than I found it.

Not someday. Not when the timing is perfect. Every single day - in meetings, in the decisions I make, in how I show up for people who trust me to carry their stories with honor.

And then there is the gratitude that lives in my DNA - the gratitude that answers to the names Warren and Webb.

I am who I am because I grew up in a home where love wasn’t rationed, joy was abundant, and faith was the compass that steadied every step. I carry their lessons like a lantern. Being their daughter will forever be one of my greatest blessings - and my deepest responsibility.

I am grateful for my children, for the way they rise, the way they stretch, the way they keep becoming. Watching them succeed is one thing; watching them pass those same values on to the children in their lives is a joy that defies words.

It is legacy made visible.

And finally, I am grateful for the journey itself.

For being chosen to walk this road with all its bends, valleys, and mountaintops. Sometimes I walk it alone, but never lonely.

Sometimes I rise by faith, trembling a little, but never discouraged. Never defeated. Because every turn, every triumph, every challenge has shaped a woman who knows exactly why she is here.

I write this today not just as a reflection of my life, but as an invitation to yours.

Pause.

Look around.

Let yourself see what’s been holding you up all along.

Gratitude is not passive. It’s active. It’s alive. It transforms leaders into healers, and ordinary days into sacred ones.

May you carry gratitude like a torch.

May you lead with love like it’s your birthright.

And may you remember - the world is waiting on the light only you can give.

Happy Thanksgiving from my home to yours.

Yes we are Black. But We Are Not Invisible.

Read today’s Sunday Substack Poem (and of course in your best Maya voice)…

“Sit down now.
School is in session.

And I am not here to make you comfortable.

Let’s drag the elephant
out of the shadows,
call it by its name,
make it look us in the eye.

You say we’ve just awakened.
But truth be told, we never closed our eyes.

Truth be told, we’ve been closest to the Divine since the first breath broke over water.

Closest to the voice that knows how deep this life cuts, how wide this wound stretches.

Two hundred years you took our bodies…”.
