Innovation in mining is often framed as a technology problem.

This conversation argues it’s equally a mindset problem.

In Episode 44 of Ore-atory, I sit down with Daniel Rau, founder of Kunin, to talk about critical minerals, entrepreneurship, innovation in mining, and why the next generation of engineers may completely reshape the industry.

But this isn’t just a conversation about lithium, process technology, or venture capital.

It’s about what happens when curiosity meets conviction.

We talk about:

* Why the future of mining depends on making more from the materials we already have
* How fresh eyes and technical curiosity can challenge decades of industry assumptions
* The growing urgency around domestic supply chains, critical minerals, and geopolitical risk
* Why younger professionals may be the key to solving mining’s talent and innovation gap
* And how entrepreneurship in mining requires resilience, adaptability, and an obsession with solving real problems

There’s a lot in this episode that reaches far beyond mining.

Leadership. Innovation. Career growth. Problem-solving. Purpose.

And honestly, some of the most interesting moments came from the unscripted conversations about how industries evolve, how people find their path, and why meaningful work still matters.

🎧 Catch Episode 44 and hear why the future of mining may belong to the people willing to rethink how the industry works from the ground up.

If you want influence, start with presence.

Ravi reminded me of a simple shift that changes the whole tone of a conversation … stop defaulting to “How are you,” start asking about What, Feel, and Who. It’s not a trick, it’s how people feel seen. And when people feel seen, they speak up, they stay, they perform.

We get practical in this Ore-atory episode, with real scripts for 1:1s, interviews, project check-ins. So you can create more values-driven, purpose centered, relationship-first conversations. Rather a "what's up".

Listen to the full convo with Ravi Rajani here - https://mrcrecruiting.com/ask-better-questions-tell-better-stories-build-lasting-trust/

Pick one person today, use the What, Feel, Who method, and notice what opens up.

Samantha Larson makes the hard searches feel a little less complicated.

Raised in Elko, Nevada and now based in Boise, she brings both deep mining roots and a broader global perspective to her work at MRC.

Before recruiting, she built experience with companies like Barrick Gold and Extrados, which gave her a strong understanding of how mining teams actually work, especially when the role is harder to define than a job description can capture.

She’s passionate about creating more visibility, connection, and opportunity for women in mining, and has spent years supporting stronger industry relationships and career pathways across the sector.

She’s especially strong in the searches that require more than a resume.

The ones where context matters. Where listening matters. Where understanding the team, the leadership, and the environment is what makes the right match possible.

That’s where she does her best work.

Most people don’t struggle with communication because they lack confidence.

They struggle because they’re too focused on being heard.

We spoke with Ravi Rajani, who breaks down why the strongest communicators ask better questions, listen with intention, and slow down enough to actually understand the people around them.

We talk about:

- Why labels like “leader,” “introvert,” or “expert” can quietly limit growth
- How thoughtful conversations build trust faster than polished talking points
- And why relationship-building still matters in a world obsessed with speed and automation

The takeaway?

People remember how you made them feel long after they forget what you said.

Most people update their resume when they have to.

Layoff. Promotion. Unexpected opportunity.

Suddenly, you're trying to explain a career that's grown a lot since the last time you opened that document. Your resume shouldn't be just a list of jobs. It's how hiring teams understand how you think, what you've done, and where you might fit next.

That's why we launched Resume & Career Services for mining professionals.

Practical guidance. Honest feedback. Materials that reflect the real depth of your experience … not just keywords on a page.

If your resume or LinkedIn hasn't been touched in a while, this might be a good time.

One thing that keeps coming up in conversations lately is this, companies say hiring needs to move quickly, but the decision-making rarely does.

And in this market, that gap matters.

Mining is still a small world, but people have more options than they used to. They’re weighing the work, the team, the timing, the family impact, the move, the stability, all of it. So when a company takes too long to decide, it’s not just an internal delay ... it changes how the opportunity feels on the other side.

In real mining environments, this gets expensive fast. Especially on technical roles, site roles, and anything tied to growth. Good candidates don’t stay available just because a company is still getting aligned. And if relocation is involved, the longer things drag out, the more likely it is that practical concerns start to outweigh the opportunity.

We talked about this on the latest Ore-atory episode, along with what we’re seeing around candidate expectations, trust in the hiring process, and why intention matters a lot more right now than people think.

If you’re hiring or thinking about a move, it’s worth a listen.

Procurement might happen behind the scenes, but in an operating environment, it has a direct impact on everything.

Materials arrive on time, costs stay controlled, suppliers stay accountable, and teams have what they need to keep moving.

Our client is looking for a Purchasing Agent who can bring structure, urgency, and good judgment to that work.

This role will support sourcing, vendor coordination, pricing analysis, inventory planning, documentation, and day-to-day purchasing needs across the operation. It’s a good fit for someone who likes details, communicates clearly, and knows how to balance cost, timing, and reliability.

Experience in mining, construction, manufacturing, or industrial operations would be a strong asset, along with ERP experience in systems like SAP, Oracle, or JD Edwards.

If you have 2–5+ years of purchasing, procurement, or supply chain experience, we’d love to connect.

If you're interested or know someone who might be, apply now: https://mrcrecruiting.com/jobs-detail/?slug=17786926773510083986GID&ver=c37f1f195cc3958127862fee7b8177a8

Most people don’t set out to build a career in mining recruitment.

Lindsey Schultz didn’t either.

She started by helping her dad, Robert Schultz, while studying human resources and organizational behavior. A few conversations turned into more. Coffee meetings, conference floors, getting to know the people behind the resumes.

And somewhere along the way, it clicked.

Lindsey went on to earn her MBA and deepen her focus on organizational effectiveness and inclusion. Today, she leads MRC with a clear point of view, hiring decisions shape more than teams, they shape careers, communities, and the direction of the industry itself.

That belief shows up in how she works.

She partners closely with organizations like Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration, Women in Mining, Femina, and American Exploration & Mining Association, supporting a more thoughtful, transparent, and sustainable future for mining.

Because for Lindsey, this work has always been about more than making hires.

It’s about helping people and companies make decisions they can stand behind, long after the role is filled.
