This is my final blog. Gender inclusiveness and equity became my focus over two decades ago, when I was the first (and only) female senior vice president at a well-known company. Later, gender diversity, equity and inclusion became the mission of my company, DifferenceWORKS, LLC. I published a book, Difference Works. For over 13 years, I did speeches, facilitated workshops, gave interviews, and provided consulting services to help organizations make “inclusion” more than an aspiration....

With a resurgence of Black Lives Matter, continued focus on the Me Too movement, and changes in how we define and see "gender," I felt I would need to apologize for writing about garden variety gender bias and discrimination. So I didn’t. This is the final blog for DifferenceWORKS. Thanks to all w...

I'm passing on a video that says what I taught to corporate leaders for 10 years. How sad we still need to say it! Confident behavior in a man is confused with competence. Competence in a woman may be overlooked -- and confidence may be criticized. Who does she think she is?!

I am sad and dismayed with the horrid and scary news. We see that black and brown people are more likely to get Covid – and to die. The news programs report yet another murder of an unarmed black man by white policemen; our justice system, after decades, still isn’t fair to non-whites, and protests are turning into violent riots across our country. Having an imaginary conversation with my grand-kids about George Floyd's murder helped me sort thgouth and make sense of this.

This is the season of love, joy and peace. I’m looking at how we achieve real diversity and inclusion in the workplace in that spirit – of peace on earth and good will to men and women. As we celebrate progress in the area of gender balance in the workplace, I continue to focus on obstacles to further progress. I work to reduce factors that make this progress slower than it need be. The news makes it official. We have a “year of the woman.” Not the first. Another. There was one in 1992. We have a new record of women in the U.S. House of Representatives, 100 or more (pending final results). There are 31 first-time women representatives – vs. 24 in 1992. There were a number of firsts, in terms of diversity, in this election. [ 379 more words ]

I have, for decades now, pursued a mission to support gender balance in business leadership. Occasionally I pause and take stock. Are we closer to a time when business can take advantage of gender diversity – i.e., get the benefits of more of the workforce? The answer is unsatisfactory to me. There is some progress but, overall, not nearly enough. In a 2012… [ 567 more words ]

The pace of progress for women in business is slow. The Supreme Court hearings continue the theme of : women, violence and silence.

When I first heard the term “radical inclusion,” I assumed it meant being very, very inclusive. In an online search of the term, I found a book by Martin Dempsey with this title, addressing inclusion as a leadership strength. And there is a group called the Fellowship that defines “radical inclusivity” as “the intentional inclusion of all persons; especially people who have traditionally lived at the margins of society.” That means addicts, convicted criminals, s*x industry workers and those whose s*xual expression challenges binary norms. “Radical Inclusion” means including – or at least listening and being civil to -- those who disagree with us. That’s my next frontier.

I recently wrote an article for a large national on-line publication. The topic was working in the era. I tried to present a balanced view and consider the perspective of men. (They aren’t all guilty.) While some men readers appreciated that, some women responded with heated criticism on one point I made, saying that I was insensitive to women and was “blaming the victim.” As an advocate for women’s equality, I was shocked. I write, speak and facilitate on topics including bias. I often focus on gender bias – the unconscious kind that women confront in the workplace. Understanding this kind of bias makes me sensitive to other kinds of bias – bias based on race, skin color, national origin, religion, or s*xual orientation. I see bias at the root of the current immigration crisis and of the “travel ban” that the Supreme Court just blessed. [ 503 more words ]

Could we find more compassion in dealing with immigrants -- and with each other?

I am not a “revolutionary.” I am committed to constant and measurable progress in the area of gender balance and gender equity. So much is happening, though, that it feels like this issue is experiencing a revolution! One of the “happenings” is a backward look at the contributions to this cause of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The documentary RBG is a reminder of what this tiny, introverted, quiet woman did for women. [ 471 more words ]

“Zero Tolerance” policies are back in fashion, driven by the movement. That sounds like a good step. But “zero tolerance” isn’t that simple. We should not tolerate any acts that reasonably causes a woman to feel insulted and unable to do her best work. But we risk lumping all kinds of acts into one bucket. The stories women have shared about experiencing “s*xual harassment” are not all the same. [ 170 more words ]

Many of us have celebrated the movement. At last, women have spoken up. Some have decried it, doubting the credibility of some or most accounts of harassment. I am one who thinks it has many upsides – and also downsides. The upsides are pretty clear. Leaders and organizations are listening and taking steps. Men who have been guilty of harassment, or might act irresponsibility in the future, are surely less likely to do that. [ 555 more words ]

Are there downside risks of the movement? How do we manage them?
