Budget bill is balanced and will be ready for introduction on Tuesday. What about full day kindergarten? It is still funded; however that is part of the School Finance Act bill that will also be introduced next week. Many debates to have and priorities to be set within that reduced funding.

We are in new reality in our country and state in the COVID-19 era. Homeland Security has done specific definitions of essential government services, and being realistic such as recognizing how important it is to keep electricity coming for emergency services and for citizens to keep warm with the lights on.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the state legislature has made the unprecedented decision to close for two weeks, from March 14 to March 30. Leadership stated they would reassess at that time, the adjournment could possibly be longer. I applaud them for putting public safety first. This is a prudent step with people coming from all over our state, the country, and even the world, being in close proximity all day, every day.

This morning I received notification that the state capitol building will be closed to the public on Monday and Tuesday, March 16 and 17 for a thorough cleaning. It is cleaned constantly during the day, every day, as a routine practice. This goes a step further.

MLK Day and the legislature is not in session. A good day for desk work, catching up, and reading MANY bills! Over 250 introduced already.

Legislative Session convenes on Wednesday, January 8, at 10 a.m. Hard to believe the interim went so quickly! Many major issues will be considered by the legislators. It also is an election year, which adds an additional dynamic.

As official "summer" draws to a close this week, business typically gets busier. Legislators, clients, and other lobbyists start looking toward the January start of legislative session. It is coming quickly! Many ideas, meetings to hold, and bills to draft (or not!).

Though the interim months are definitely not as busy as the legislative session, it is not “time off” as some people assume. This is the important time of year to meet with clients, give legislative updates and annual reports, meet with legislators in their districts, and arrange tours of client facilities. Another very enjoyable part of the lobbying job.
