This van is sitting in a parking lot, waiting to be picked up.

It was our first one. Seven years ago it was the whole company: one van, one phone number, and a lot of hope that the phone would ring.

It's being retired so we can order another. Since this one, we've bought nearly 40.

That number sounds like a straight line. It wasn't.

The pandemic came early and we barely survived. There were weeks I didn't know if we'd make it to the next one. We kept the doors open one day at a time.

Then came turnover. Good people left, sometimes all at once, and the work didn't slow down to wait for us to rebuild. Every hire felt like starting over.

Then Florida. With Mr. Electric we learned what hurricane season really means for a small business: crews with their own homes in the storm's path, still showing up for customers afterward.

I think about a line from Theodore Roosevelt a lot:

"The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood... who errs, who comes short again and again... who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly."

That's what owning a small business feels like. Not the highlight reel. The dust.

We've come up short plenty. We'll come up short again. But every one of those 40 vans was a bet that the next year would be better than the last, and that the people inside them were worth betting on.

It's not easy. We persist.

Your dryer shouldn't take three cycles to finish one load.

If clothes come out damp, the drum never gets hot, or it's running forever, that's usually a heating element, a thermostat, or a vent that's given up. It's not a reason to buy a new machine this week.
