It was an honor to welcome New Mexico State Senator Liz Stefanics to Juniper Sol — a community solar garden made possible by legislation she helped champion.

In 2021, Senator Stefanics sponsored Senate Bill 84, the groundbreaking Community Solar Act that established New Mexico’s community solar program and made the state the 21st in the nation to enable community solar.

The program was designed to make the benefits of solar more accessible across New Mexico. Each community solar garden must dedicate at least 30% of its capacity to low-income subscribers, while opening participation to renters, households, small businesses, nonprofits, Tribal communities, and others who may not have access to rooftop solar.

Four years after the Community Solar Act was signed into law, it was especially meaningful to welcome Senator Stefanics to Juniper Sol and see that vision taking shape firsthand.

Thank you, Senator Stefanics, for helping pave the way for a more accessible and inclusive community solar program in New Mexico.

We were honored to welcome Deb Haaland, Democratic nominee for Governor of New Mexico, as a keynote speaker at the ribbon cutting for our Juniper Sol Community Solar Garden in Santa Fe County.

Speaking to subscribers, community partners, and state and local leaders, Haaland highlighted the role community solar can play in making renewable energy and meaningful savings accessible to more New Mexicans.

“People shouldn't have to choose between putting gas in their car, paying for groceries or paying their electricity bill, and that's why projects like this are so important. Juniper Sol is making the cost-saving benefits of renewable energy accessible to all, including renters and those who can't afford the upfront installation of solar panels on their homes.”

As the first community solar project to come online in Santa Fe County, Juniper Sol represents an important milestone for community solar in New Mexico. We’re grateful to Deb Haaland for joining us to celebrate the garden, our subscribers, and the continued growth of community solar across the state.

What a morning at Juniper Sol!

Last Wednesday, we officially celebrated the opening of our Juniper Sol Community Solar Garden in Santa Fe County alongside subscribers, community partners, state and local leaders, and many of the people who helped bring this project to life.

We were honored to welcome our featured keynote speakers, Democratic nominee for Governor of New Mexico Congresswoman Deb Haaland and Lieutenant Governor Candidate Stephanie Garcia Richard, along with New Mexico Public Regulation Commissioner Gabriel Aguilera, State Senator Liz Stefanics, and Navajo Technical University President Dr. Elmer Guy.

During her remarks, Secretary Haaland highlighted the impact community solar can have for New Mexico families:

“People shouldn't have to choose between putting gas in their car, paying for groceries or paying their electricity bill, and that's why projects like this are so important. Juniper Sol is making the cost-saving benefits of renewable energy accessible to all, including renters and those who can't afford the upfront installation of solar panels on their homes.”

Juniper Sol is a 6.2 MWdc community solar garden and the first community solar project to come online in Santa Fe County. More than 50% of the garden’s capacity is dedicated to income-qualified subscribers, helping expand access to the savings and benefits of community solar.

A special thank you to our community partners, Navajo Technical University, the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women, and Santa Fe Habitat for Humanity, our partners at Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM), E Light Electric Services, Inc. and everyone who joined us to celebrate this milestone.

We’re proud to introduce Juniper Sol to the community and excited about the communities it will serve for years to come.

Last week, Governor Jared Polis (Governor Jared Polis) signed HB26-1225, an important piece of legislation that will transform distributed generation interconnection policy in Colorado and set an example for other states to follow. This bill passed the CO legislature with impressive bi-partisan margins, and 100% yes-vote in the Senate. Importantly the legislation requires utilities to allow developers to hire third parties to conduct interconnection studies and perform the physical grid upgrades required to build projects. This will allow private companies to dramatically accelerate the interconnection process that can delay projects by years, and allow the industry to rapidly grow to meet increasing energy demands.

The bill also includes new requirements that help community solar bill credits keep pace with changes in electricity rates over time for low income customers. Together, these changes help protect the value community solar delivers to subscribers and make it easier to bring new projects online.
SunShare CEO and Founder David Amster-Olszewski joined Governor Polis at the bill signing ceremony to celebrate this important step forward for Colorado’s community solar industry. SunShare worked alongside industry partners to advocate for this legislation and support its passage. As the first state in the nation to establish a community solar program, Colorado has long been a leader in community solar, and this bill helps ensure a bright future for the industry.

Thank you to Governor Jared Polis, Representatives Lesley Smith, Jenny Willford, Senators Matthew Ball, Scott Bright, and The Honorable Mike Foote and Lori Saine for their leadership and work advancing this legislation.

The mountains, forests, rivers, and skies around us give life to every community, every family, and every generation. We’re all connected through the world beneath our feet and the air we breathe, a reminder that caring for our planet means caring for each other.

Today, we celebrate the spirit of nurturing, resilience, and generosity that surrounds us every day in nature. May we continue to protect the places that sustain us, appreciate their beauty, and leave them better for those who come after us.
