Places in Denver, Boulder, and Colorado Springs that are basically covertly charging a Couvert or cover charge for you to buy from them whether you dine in or take out. This fee is to “pay the kitchen staff or the restaurant staff in general”. It would be fine if the restaurant owners weren’t already a part of some association where they are given special permission to pay their workers less than the state minimum wage. Now, as patrons we are responsible for making up the difference in wages because they choose not to change their pay structures.
Trust me, I currently work a service industry job that depends upon tips and I personally worked 15 years plus in the restaurant industry and was raised within the culture but I still don’t like to be surprised by “service fees, cover or Couvert, or mandatory gratuity fees of 20% or more” when I’m dining alone or grabbing food to go. Here is a list of restaurants and their fees and whether or not they are disclosing the fees publicly on their website or not.
Get your receipts and be mindful of where you are spending your money. If the service and food isn’t quality then it’s definitely not worth your money plus extra fees.
