Aging often brings changing needs, difficult decisions, uncertainty, and transitions for older adults and their families.

In a culture that tends to focus on “fixing” problems, it can be helpful to remember that aging is not something to solve or control perfectly. It is a season of life that deserves compassion, dignity, thoughtful support, and care.

When Uber, Lyft, or driving is no longer the right fit, many families start looking for transportation company options.

A simple place to begin is searching:
“Transportation companies in [your city/town area].”

One important thing to know is that there are generally 2 types of transportation services:

1. Ambulatory Transportation Services
“Ambulatory” means able to walk. This type of service is for someone who is able to walk independently, or walk using a walker or cane.

2. Wheelchair Transportation Services
This service is for someone using a wheelchair or transport chair.

Some companies provide both services. Many provide one or the other — so it is important to ask.

Finding the right transportation fit can make a big difference in helping older adults maintain access to appointments, activities, and daily life.

“Just use Uber or Lyft.”

I often hear adult children of aging parents say this to their aging loved ones. But I know the reality that it is not an easy-peasy task for every older adult.

Technology and apps can feel daunting and scary if they have never used them. Many older adults struggle to use (or even think about using) Uber or Lyft.

So, if you have suggested this to your aging parents — or heard someone else say it — my advice is: don’t just tell them to use Uber.

Write down instructions on exactly which buttons to press. AND DEFINITELY practice using Uber or Lyft with them. Go to the grocery store together or have Uber drive you to lunch. Instruct them on what buttons to press and have them do it themselves.

And maybe practice using these services more than once so they begin to feel more familiar and comfortable.

When there is resistance — or it simply doesn’t work — then it may be time to explore alternative transportation options. While these services are often more expensive, they may be worth the peace of mind and ease of use.

One of the most important questions to ask is: how long will me or my loved one need Assisted Living?

If your plan covers 8–10 years, that’s a strong position. If it’s shorter, it just means it’s time to plan ahead.

There’s often more to the financial picture than it seems at first.

Beyond monthly income, consider savings, retirement accounts, home equity, and benefits like Long Term Care (LTC) insurance or Veteran's Affairs (VA) support.

It’s easy to feel unsure where to begin.

Start with a simple “mock budget”—looking at rent, care needs, and everyday expenses. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just a starting point.

Insider Tip: Apartment size plays a bigger role than most people realize.

A second bedroom can add $1,000–$2,500/month Just something to keep in mind as you’re exploring Assisted Living options.

Planning for assisted living often starts with one big question: what does it actually cost?

In Denver, most communities range from $6,500–$9,500/month. Knowing that range can help you start thinking more clearly about next steps.

Costs can vary more than people expect.

A one-bedroom in assisted living might be $8,800/month, while a studio could be less — but either way, it adds up quickly.

Planning ahead can make a big difference in finding a place that’s sustainable long-term.
