When working on your college applications, you will get lots of advice—especially about your personal statement. Make sure you stay true to yourself, your values, and your writing style! This is YOUR essay, and it should reflect who you are. So, tune out the noise and focus on your message. This is not a creative writing piece; it is a personal statement. The reader should learn something about you that they won’t find elsewhere in your college application.

When writing your Common App essay, keep in mind that it is not a creative writing piece. It is a personal statement that needs a clear and insightful message. Make sure admissions learn about who you are as a person or a student from reading your essay.

Students often want to start their personal statements with a quote. I always advise against this. Colleges want to hear the student’s voice. They want to get to know the student. Don’t use someone else’s words to convey your thoughts.

I have said it before, and I will say it again. HIGH SCHOOL is two words!! Every year, I get emails, activity lists and essays that say “highschool.” I am not sure why this is such a common mistake, but it is one that is ALWAYS flagged by spellcheckers. The lesson here is we all make mistakes. But we need to pay attention to those red squiggly lines indicating something is wrong! Colleges care. Need help proofing your work? Just reach out!

Rising seniors! Did you know you can start an account on the Common App now? Just be sure to only fill out the information under the “Common App” tab. Do not fill out any college-specific information, as that will be deleted August 1. If you have any questions, just reach out!
