D-Day is more than a lesson in history. It is a lesson in leadership. Great leaders don’t wait for perfect conditions. They make difficult decisions, inspire others through action, and remain committed to the mission even when the path forward is unclear.

Today, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and leadership demonstrated by those who landed on the beaches of Normandy and all who supported the mission.

Their example reminds us that leadership is not about position or title; it is about character, accountability, and serving others when it matters most.

Leveling up safety knowledge!

Last week, I traveled up to Bismarck, ND to work with Columbia Grain International for an OSHA 30-Hour training!

What made this experience even more impactful was the opportunity to utilize local area professionals in Bismarck, who contributed their real-world expertise and insights. Their knowledge brought practical context to the training and highlighted the importance of safety in our own communities.

Safety isn’t just a requirement; it’s a responsibility. ✔️

It all started with a duck named Ducksworth.

A simple thing that carried a powerful purpose. During some of the toughest moments on tour, my brother Nick carried that duck as a reminder to keep moving forward when it wasn’t easy.

That duck became more than just something to hold onto. It became a symbol of resilience, perspective, and strength in the face of life’s hardest situations.

Nick Melton
August 5, 1986 – April 18, 2022

Some die in battle from combat injuries. Others are taken far too soon years after they have left the battlefield.

On this day 4 years ago, Nick was taken far too soon after a 3 year battle with internal and psychological injuries from his 7 deployments serving his country as a U.S. Army Ranger.

Today, his legacy lives on.

Thousands of ducks have been handed out since, each one carrying the same message and the same heartbeat behind it:
• Be tough
• Smile
• Let it roll off your back
• Rise up

Our challenge to you: take a duck and pass it along as a reminder that no matter how calm we may appear above the surface, below it we are all kicking to stay afloat. Some have to kick harder than others… but nonetheless, we are all kicking.

Never quit. Don’t give up. Keep kicking. And remember you’re not alone.

Ducks flock together.

Be a duck. Keep kicking. Find your flock. Find your purpose. And be a positive influence.

Had the opportunity to speak at the Wisconsin Safety Conference on a topic that sparks a lot of conversation: Is BBS on life support?

Behavior-Based Safety often gets labeled as outdated or ineffective when in reality, many programs aren’t failing… they’re just missing the mark.

The strongest BBS systems aren’t built on checklists or counting observations. They’re built on the quality of the conversation.

When observations turn into meaningful dialogue is where trust is built, perspectives are shared, and people feel seen rather than evaluated. That’s where real culture shift happens.

It’s not about how many observations you complete.
It’s about how you connect when you’re in the moment.

Grateful for the engagement, the challenges, and the shared passion for doing safety differently.
