What is the key to finding talent? Interview everyone. Talk to every applicant. You will find talents that outweigh their lack of experience. Or not. Just remember that resumes do not fully define any of us, no more than our pages or job history. And don't stop with resumes. Look for talent everywhere and anywhere. The super-friendly woman at the sandwich shop. The counter person at the clothing store who makes great eye contact and is extremely attentive and helpful. The pet groomer who seems unfazed when your dog growls and snarls and won't sit still. The high energy waiter who doesn't take notes and somehow manages to remember everyone's order with zero mistakes with your party of 25. People watched David Letterman do the weather on tv station WLWI in Indianapolis because he was hilarious, not because he knew anything about cold fronts. Happy is a talent. Patience is a talent. Great active listening is a talent. High level communication is a talent. Compassion is a talent. A great attitude is a talent. You can't train any of this in anyone who does not inherently have it. That is what makes these talents less common and more valuable to any company. Look for talent, hire talent and train skills.
