Some people think of life, business, and themselves as linear; with a solid beginning, an end, and everything else in between as simply a path.

What they don’t realize is that everything matters, in particular the small stuff. The whole is always the result of all the mundane, ordinary, and seemingly uneventful tasks. Success, impact, and sustainability ultimately always come down to one thing; excellence.

Paving the path to excellence is crucial and requires simple but sustained lifestyle choices. The first and foremost thing is a mindset. With an approach dedicated to growth, positivity, and willingness to take on anything, humans can transcend the limits they create for themselves.

The second most important thing is commitment. Without being committed to something, even the tiniest and simplest of tasks can be tiresome and painful. Commitment is crucial and holds tremendous power for individuals.

With these two basic elements, we can pave the path to excellence.

People are often categorized into two bipolar categories by not just other people but even themselves. These categories can be termed in various different ways; successful and unsuccessful, extraordinary and ordinary, and achievers and non achievers. While these categories can be sweeping and generic, they allude mainly to a person’s professional achievements. From the research i’ve done and the considerable experience I have, the distinction between achievers and non achievers isn’t what it seems. A person could be making a six figure salary yet still be a non achiever, whereas a person that isn’t successful by contemporary standards could be an achiever.
The distinction between achievers and non achievers is more about a mindset, an approach and an analytical lens. Achievers have an outlook that focuses on the long-term, on excellence and growth. Non achievers could be exceptionally effective at getting things done or short-term targets but lack an outlook of excellence. People that make an impact on others and on the world are achievers. Motivated by growth and the yearning for excellence, these people can be a part of an organization and truly revolutionize policy, practice and human life.

Excellence is like a lighthouse that provides you with direction.

Achieving excellence is not easy neither free; it is not magic, coincidence or luck; it is instead a journey. The journey to excellence follows a structured process.

Excellence is a mindset!

It is a journey that requires both effectiveness and efficiency. Effectiveness is the compass of the journey; it is discovering and pursuing your inherent passion. Efficiency is the impetus of it; that brings focus, discipline, and speed to the journey. So indulge in our structured process based on deep research & vast experience to get going.

The pathway to excellence, however, isn't random. It has to be passionately pursued with resilience and grit. Based on my experience, learning, and observing the best, I have outlined a 5 step process that guides us through the journey to excellence. Stay tuned for further posts on more details.

"Excellence always" Let us help you in the journey to excellence.

Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.

We all dream of becoming excellent, significant, or the best in class, but we are constantly challenged with the decision to take the road less traveled. We are afraid of failure, pain, and not conforming to the standards in the journey to excellence.
For these reasons, I believe courage is one of the top qualities of achieving excellence. Courage doesn’t mean you don’t get afraid; it means you don’t let the fear stop you from pursuing excellence.

Many spiritual philosophies throughout human history, regardless of how different they may be in practice or how diverse their major tenets may be, revolve around what lies within us. A tale as old as time, many spiritualists argue that we possess the entire universe within us, secrets that evade us, just waiting to be explored with spirituality.
The human thirst for spiritual companionship, the need for something deeper, is expressed exceptionally well in Rumi’s The Vigil. Targeting the human struggle for spiritual growth and deeper meaning, The Vigil talks about how a superficial life is not enough and that the struggle for excellence must always continue. Whether it is during the day or the night, the connection with the divine, in other words, the spiritual companion, and the yearning for something deeper must always remain with us.
Diverse and intricate in their thinking, humans need meaningful lives. The passion must continue, the yearning must remain, and humans must pursue and unleash the excellence that lies within them.

The starting point of strategic cost reduction is to realize the need for change. It is all about creating a sense of urgency to win in the age of disruption. Out of many key performance indicators, cost (revenue, expenses, margin) provides the best quantitative objective to start an open, honest, and convincing dialogue about what's happening in the company, the competition, and the marketplace.
One of the most common errors in successful organizational change is underestimating the power of vision, and the strategic cost reduction dialogue builds the foundation of sustainable transformation. Through my experience in developing many transformation roadmaps, cost challenge falls under the following three categories:
1-Efficiency gap - Not meeting the budget
The gap between the company's target performance, or budget, and its actual performance is the efficiency gap. This situation poses a serious challenge, where the company is not meeting its internal standards and commitments to the stakeholders. This requires a deep analysis of the variance by areas, types, and root causes to develop a course of action.
2-Competitiveness gap - Behind the competition
Even if a company is meeting its internal standards, its success depends on its competitiveness in the market. Therefore, it is essential to understand the market position and conduct competitor analysis to constantly stay updated with the products, cost, and market opportunities. Although this analysis is quite challenging due to the ready availability of data, it is an important exercise to understand key competitors, product features, market share, pricing, differentiation, and customer reviews. This information is often available through financial reports, press releases, industry events, and other means. Based on this analysis, a comprehensive plan must be developed to achieve cost leadership.
3- Innovation gap - Unleashing the full potential
Sometimes, cost leadership is not good enough, and the company must innovate. As technology is drastically changing, companies must understand the innovation potential and harness the power of creativity. This area is particularly tricky as companies need to see beyond the foreseeable future. Examples of Kodak, Blockbuster, Blackberry, and many provide us great insights into how market leaders became laggards by not paying attention to the product and business model innovation. To understand the innovation gap, look at your guiding purpose, winning capabilities, and the market opportunities and develop a bold aspiration for the future. Then, based on this vision, embark on the innovation journey by generating ideas, screening, experimenting, commercializing, and finally fully implementing the innovation.
So, start to understand the cost challenge and leverage this opportunity to rally the organization to embark on the strategic transformation journey.
Cheers!

Strategic Cost Reduction Program Post 1/10:

Rule Number 1 - Don't Wing It!

2022 is just around the corner, and improvement objectives are on everyone's minds, especially as we are coming out of the pandemic. We are challenged more than ever with the timeless problem of improving cost and funding our growth. So, I plan to write several posts to highlight the usual gaps and share my thoughts on a strategic and structured cost reduction approach.

Like every year, we are in the season to establish next year's budget, set aggressive targets, and define cost reduction projects. And many like always will wing it - some wishful thinking, adhoc list of projects, creative juggling of numbers, and just before Christmas, we will get the job done. The following year will start with lots of energy until reality shows its ugly face and we begin again.

Here I offer eight concrete steps to establish a strategic and sustainable cost reduction program to achieve competitive advantage:

0 Establish a team - its a team sport. Pay attention to cross-functional!

Understand the cost challenge - know where we are in terms of budget (efficiency gap), competition (competitiveness gap), and innovation (innovation potential). This is the starting point!

Know the 4 magic numbers - Understand, define, and communicate: conversion cost $, waste $ to attack, project portfolio $ and savings target $. This is the new lingo of cost reduction!
Get a deep understanding of losses - Define the BIG losses and stratify them to a granular level. This will bring clarity to cost reduction objectives.
Develop a project portfolio and savings target - Based on losses priority, develop a project portfolio and define savings target.

Allocate resources to realize projects - Know the resources and funding required to complete projects and realize savings. You snooze here; you lose.
Plan on developing competence - Understand the skills (technical, problem solving, and leadership) gaps and plan on building competence.

Establish a governance system - Set up a compass room and meeting cadence (quarterly, monthly, weekly, daily) to achieve saving targets. Don't miss this boat!

So this year, don't wing it. Set the foundation of a strategic cost reduction program to achieve your stretch targets. Details on steps 1-6 to follow.

Cheers

I love this quote from Walt Disney that prescribed the formula of success from dream to reality. However, on the contrary, we are constantly stressed to 'stop dreaming and start doing' and are conditioned to play safe and follow the status quo. This thinking fosters a fixed mindset and limited horizon that impedes progress.

Many of us don't fully realize the value of big dreams in achieving growth and innovation. Yet, transforming a big vision into reality requires belief, courage, and massive action, and this is where many of us miss the mark.

Walt Disney's achievements from an ordinary paperboy to a successful film producer and the founder of Disney World parks was no dumb luck or free pass. Instead, it followed the timeless principle of "think big, start small, learn and grow fast."
