We are thrilled to announce the 4th Annual Women Leaders of Michigan (WLOM) Lunch Reception, taking place during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Annual Legislative Convention, on Thursday, September 25, 2025, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM at Swahili Village Bar and Grill in Washington, D.C.
✨WLOM event was founded FOUR YEARS AGO over coffee & fellowship with two MPLP Alumni Black Caucus members, we currently have three dynamic MPLP ABC alumni serving actively on the WLOM planning committee, and have supported this year’s events.
This year’s theme—“Women Power America”—celebrates the dynamic leadership and civic power of women across policy, education, government, and advocacy. This isn’t simply a networking luncheon—it’s a convening of community builders, elected officials, policy influencers, and advocates who move the needle for Michigan and beyond— and well attended by leaders across America.

About WLOM
Since our first gathering, WLOM has become one of the most anticipated Michigan-based events during CBC Week. The luncheon is intentionally intimate yet powerful, offering a platform to honor women who rarely seek the spotlight, but whose leadership keeps our communities moving forward.
Past WLOM honorees include:
Former Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence
Wayne County Commission Chair Alisha Bell
Detroit City Council Member Mary Waters
Global African Business Alliance Co-Founder O. Rerhi Onomake
WLOM also welcomes elected leaders, labor allies, organizers, and cultural influencers from Detroit and across Michigan. The energy in the room reflects true community—from executive leaders and legislators to the advocates, educators, and women who power our cities.
A Distinctive Honor
In our WLOM tradition for the last 3 years, instead of ‘plaques & trophies’ each honoree will receive a one-of-a-kind piece of commissioned artwork created by an up and coming Detroit-based artist. Rather than a traditional plaque, this original art serves as a lasting, equity-building tribute to their leadership and impact—celebrating their legacy through Detroit’s rich creative culture.
This year WLOM Committee Member, State Representative Brenda Carter, will host a special invitation only brunch-hour WLOM CBC Spa Day on Saturday, September 27, 2025, as part of the WLOM weekend. All 2025 and past soonsors & honorees will be warmly invited to attend this exclusive spa day experience. Details are forthcoming, as this is a new addition to our celebration.
Sponsorship & Support Opportunities
We invite MPLP ABC to celebrate the growth of this event and JOIN US as a 2025 SPONSOR.
