As a life long educator, literacy is near and dear to my heart and my love for the city of Detroit is right there as well‼️

🚨According to a report released by the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund, more than 200,000 Detroit residents — 47 percent of Motor City adults — are "functionally illiterate”. That means they can't fill out basic forms, read a prescription, or handle other tasks most Americans take for granted.

🚨Not only is this alarming, it’s quite heartbreaking. Could you imagine being an adult, people assuming you know how to read efficiently, and you’re barely getting by? No one should have to experience that. After all, we live in the greatest country in the world, right!? HA!

🚨Many factors contribute to this, but it all goes back to those of us in underserved communities always getting the short end of the stick.

🚨These words said by Lilla Watson serve as my personal mission statement and remind me of the importance of advocating for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in all spaces.

🚨The thing is, too often we think that DEI is only for certain people, in certain places, doing certain things. However, that could be furthest from the truth!

🚨In some way, shape, or form we ALL have some WORK to DO to ensure that ALL of us have what we need to thrive.

🚨DEI work, in its simplest explanation, is the basic consideration of all human beings. Once we understand this, we’ll be one step closer to liberation.

🚨Whats popping my people! Im Parish, owner and founder of Do The Work Consulting!

I can not express how excited I am to begin this journey to help us all get better at getting better!

🚨Read below to learn a little about me!

Parish Halsell is a dynamic DEI (diversity, equity & inclusion) learning and development leader. His expertise lies in building bridges across differences, planning and facilitating engaging learning experiences, and enacting organizational change. Parish leverages DEI best practices to advise leaders, align key stakeholders and provide continued education through his consulting practice, Do The Work Consulting, LLC.

Parish has a Master of Education degree with a concentration in Educational Psychology and Applied Behavior Analysis from Wayne State University. He also has a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Howard University.

As a professional with several marginalized identities, Parish has a lifelong commitment to social justice activism. He is a lifelong educator and serves on the Board of Directors for Detroit Speaks, Incorporated, a non-profit that provides high school-aged youth in Metropolitan-Detroit with opportunities to increase social awareness, community involvement and develop leadership skills. Outside of advocating for change, Parish enjoys singing off key, buying shoes he doesn’t need, and reading AA historical fiction. 😁

Our work is at the intersection of education and social justice. We understand the real world implications of what it means to have a marginalized identity in this country, and one sure way to help others understand is through exposure and learning about people, places, and things that are different than you.
