I’LL PRAISE YOU IN FRONT OF THE ROOM.

I’LL CORRECT YOU IN PRIVATE.

That sounds simple, but it changes how people experience leadership.

People should know when their work is valued. They should also be able to make mistakes, ask questions, and receive honest feedback without feeling humiliated.

Accountability and psychological safety can exist in the same workplace.

That’s the kind of environment I want to build.

Think about the last business you decided to spend money with.
What made you comfortable enough to say yes?
Was it a recommendation? Reviews? Their work? The way they communicated with you?

Trust can start in different places, and that's something worth paying attention to as a business owner.
Because if you know what creates trust for your audience, you can build more of it into the way you show up.

What's your answer: A, B, C, D or E?

One thing I've learned from being in business is that you rarely know which interaction will come back around.

Someone you couldn't help today may refer someone to you next year.

A former employee may become a future partner.

A person you helped without expecting anything in return may remember that conversation for years.

You don't have to treat people well because you never know what they can do for you.

You treat people well because that's how you want to do business.

The interesting part is that reputation tends to follow.

AI is changing how businesses operate. But adopting the technology is only the beginning.

The bigger questions are becoming increasingly important: How do you design AI systems that actually support the way a business operates?

And perhaps most importantly, where should human judgment remain firmly in control?

These are the conversations I'll be bringing to the National Microloan Conference this October, where I'll be speaking on AI Safety & Scams and AI Systems Building.

I’m looking forward to getting into the practical side of building with AI responsibly, strategically, and with a clear understanding of the risks.

“You have to spend money to make money” is advice I've heard my entire career. And sometimes, it's true.

But spending money isn't automatically an investment just because it's attached to your business.

Before I spend, I want to know what I'm buying, what problem it solves, what outcome I'm expecting and how I'll know whether it worked.

Business owners don't need to avoid spending. They need to understand why they're spending.

What's one business expense you've paid for that genuinely made a difference?

Which one would you choose?
There isn't one perfect answer. That's the point.

When you're evaluating an opportunity, the number on the proposal is only one part of the picture.

Drop A, B or C below.

A big revenue number feels good. I get it.

But one of the biggest mistakes I see business owners make is treating revenue as the full picture.

Revenue tells you what came in. Profit tells you what remained after expenses. Cash flow tells you what's actually available to keep the business moving.

You need to understand all three if you want to understand what's really happening inside your business.

Which one do you pay the most attention to right now?

AI has been around longer than most of us realize.

What we’re experiencing now is a different chapter, with large language models changing how we interact with the technology.

I spoke about the connection between LLMs, pattern recognition, and something surprisingly familiar: the way humans make sense of the world.

It’s a simple idea, but once you understand it, the way you think about AI starts to shift.

A $1,000 client isn't necessarily worth more than a $500 client.

It depends on what it takes to serve them.

How many revisions do they need? How much communication do they require? Do they respect the scope? Do they pay on time? Do they create opportunities for future work?

The invoice tells you what a client paid. It doesn't always tell you what the relationship actually cost your business.

What do you consider when deciding whether a client is truly valuable?

One of my biggest business lessons came from a client relationship that went badly.

We had unclear boundaries, the scope wasn't strong enough, and I learned the hard way that a good relationship isn't a substitute for a good agreement.

That experience changed how I structure client relationships today.

I don't love making mistakes, but I do want to learn everything I can from them.

What's a business mistake that taught you something you still use today?
