Did you know that today is National Avocado Day?
Yep, July 31 is the official day to celebrate this superfood.
There is something naturally beautiful about cutting into a perfectly ripe, green avocado! It took me a little while to learn to love this vegetable/fruit, but now it has become a staple in my diet and you can find the creamy green goodness across the board these days on toast, made into guacamole, in smoothies, and adorning sandwiches and salads.
Here are 10 Interesting Facts about the Avocado!
1. Scientifically named βPersea Americana,β Avocados are fruits that can technically be considered berries.
2. Avocados are the Aztec symbol of love and fertility because they cannot self-pollinate and they grow in pairs on trees.
3. Avocados are expensive - more so than most other fruits - because of the high labor cost. The high-hanging fruit, which is only hand-picked, is plucked by using long poles.
4. The major commercial producers of avocado are Mexico, Dominican Republic, Columbia, Peru, and Indonesia.
5. In Jamaica, the common name for avocados is βalligator pearβ because of its texture and shape.
6. Avocados never ripen on trees. They become mature on trees but only after harvesting do they ripen.
Placed in a brown bag with an apple or a banana, avocados ripen more quickly than usual. Why so? Thatβs because apples or bananas release ethylene gas β a natural hormones present in plants.
This hormone helps the avocados to ripen quickly.
7. There exist 1,062 varieties of avocado and a single avocado tree can produce up to 500 avocados per year.
8. Avocados are rich in vitamins, nutrients and fiber (both soluble and insoluble). They also have more potassium than bananas and more protein than any other fruit.
9. Avocados are good sources of monounsaturated fats. They help to increase good cholesterol keeping our heart healthy.
