⚖️ Most Compliance Issues Don’t Start with Bad Intent

A business owner told me, “We treat people fairly. We don’t need a bunch of policies.” They had 18 employees. Everything felt informal—but in a good way.

Until an employee requested time off for a medical issue. The manager handled it the way they always did— “Let’s just figure it out as we go.”

*No documentation.
*No consistency.
*No understanding of leave requirements.

A few weeks later, the employee didn’t return. Then came a complaint. From the owner’s perspective, nothing felt wrong. From a compliance standpoint, everything was.

Between compliance, performance, reviews, dealer, issues, leadership, coaching in the never-ending, “quick questions”, there’s never a dull moment. This character pretty much catches the reality of my day-to-day and it made me smile because it’s spot on.
