Majestic! SilenceandSound reviews Sean Noonan Music's "The Drummer of Tedworth"

"Accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra, Sean Noonan delivers a masterful opus, a mixture of contemporary music, bright jazz and shocking symphonic arrangements. An epic album that transports us to a land of all possibilities, where suspense is supported by nuanced music, wrapped in punk explosiveness and swirling contrasts."

Inspired by events in 1661, in the quiet village of Tedworth, England, where a respectable household became the center of one of the earliest and most disturbing poltergeist cases ever recorded, storyteller/drummer/composer Sean Noonan's "The Drummer of Tedworth" is out now on Neuma Records

Pan M 360 reviews Sean Noonan's new album, saying he "avoids the academicism of conceptual dissonance to embrace a shattered and humor-filled expressionism." The review goes on to say that the work "could make 'Alice in Wonderland' seem conventional and even impress Eugène Ionesco."

High praise!

Conor Hanick's recording of Hans Otte's "Book of Sounds" is out now on Il Pirata Records. John Schaefer (New Sounds) featured the album on Friday's roundup, saying :::

"'The Book Of Sounds' was recorded by Otte in the mid-80s, and despite being a mainstay of our early New Sounds shows, it seemed destined to be one of those overlooked, idiosyncratic masterpieces that dot the history of music. Then came Conor Hanick, who fell in love with the work and began playing it, in its entirety, at music festivals like the 2022 Ojai Festival in California. Today, his studio recording came out, and with the benefit of forty years of hindsight (and a lot more virtuosity than Otte, who was not a professional pianist), Hanick really makes this set of works feel like a single narrative unfolding. This first part has two simple, alternating chords that then give way to a lovely swirl of repeating phrases. Both gestures, if not the actual notes within, return later in the piece."

Storyteller/drummer/composer Sean Noonan Music's "The Drummer of Tedworth" is out now on Neuma Records.

Amplified sums up the vibe well here.

"The Drummer of Tedworth ... defies any easy categorization. Jazz? Contemporary classical? Rock opera? Radio play? It’s all of those—and none of them in their pure form. Noonan stands at the center with his voice and his drums, while the orchestra becomes an active character. It comments, contradicts, and escalates. Nothing here is mere accompaniment."

BBC's Night Tracks features Third Angle New Music's premiere recording of Philip Glass' "1000 Airplanes on the Roof" – out March 6 on Orange Mountain Music.

"1000 Airplanes on the Roof," by Philip Glass with a libretto by David Henry Hwang, is a “science fiction music drama” which premiered July 15, 1988 at the Vienna International Airport, Hangar No. 3. Set in New York City, the character “M” recalls encounters with extra-terrestrial life forms, including their message, “It is better to forget, it is pointless to remember. No one will believe you.” Are the surrealistic details an accurate recollection of a voyage through space, part of a drug-induced nightmare, or the beginning of a mental breakdown?

In this premiere recording, the libretto is read by Ithica Tell as “M,” and extended instrumental tracks are featured on "Disc 2."

A Far Cry's Valentine's Day show on Saturday has been highlighted at WBUR 90.9 FM, The Bay State Banner, and Rock 92.9 Rocks. You can catch this program on Friday in Groton, MA at Groton Hill Music, and Saturday at Jordan Hall!

Heart Strings pairs sweeping, emotionally charged music with live poetic responses by Anthony Febo (), a Puerto Rican poet, teaching artist, and performer whose work centers joy, identity, family, and resilience. Delivered in real time, Febo’s poetry responds directly to the music onstage, offering fresh emotional entry points and bridging sound, story, and lived experience.

The stage itself becomes part of the experience, adorned with flower sculpture installations by Christine Arveil, a French-American painter and installation artist whose work is shown internationally and reflects on survival and the persistence of beauty and love. Together, sound and space transform the concert hall into a lush, romantic environment that heightens the drama and intimacy of the evening.

And the connection doesn’t end with the final note. Following the performance, audiences are invited for a chocolate and wine reception, with the option to take part in a 60-minute facilitated conversation experience in partnership with Skip the Small Talk — an organization founded in Boston to combat loneliness and spark meaningful human connection.

This is such a cool feature from WBUR 90.9 FM's Andrea Shea. Last weekend's collaboration between yeemz and A Far Cry was joyous and adventurous. Turning the cello on its side is a rich metaphor for what A Far Cry does day in and day out. You can listen at WBUR.org:
