For thousands of years, people have marked this day by watching the sun, gathering with family, and celebrating the changing seasons.

Obsidian born from volcanoes.

No visible crystals.
No grain.
Just lava that cooled so fast it froze into volcanic glass.

Sharp enough to rival surgical steel.
Fragile enough to shatter like ice.

Something volcanic just landed at The Stone Pit!

Fresh obsidian from Burns, Oregon, is finally starting to come out of the boxes! Dust from the dig is still covering much of the material, but the first flashes of flow banding, sheen, glassy fracture faces, and deep green obsidian are already starting to emerge.

Mahogany. Silver sheen. Tri-flow. Greens. Crazy lace. Primitive-grade rough from the Oregon high desert.!

Incoming, workable spalls were struck by Emory C***s, with blades by Emory coming later.

Right now, the work begins:
sorting, cleaning, testing stone, and deciding which pieces stay rough, which become spalls, and which deserve to remain collector pieces exactly as they came from the desert!
