Which answer?
There are two primary schools of thought regarding how people look at managing how they want to plan & live their lives.

Some seek out growth and study new approaches to improve their lives. They collect challenging philosophies and blogs that make them examine themselves and the path that they are on.

Others seem to focus only on collecting platitudes, philosophies & approaches that support how they have always thought, believed & acted, which in some cases merely strengthens a poisonous position. Rather than seeking AN answer...some people accept only THE answer that supports their original thinking.

TICK-TOCK...Time is Flying by !Don’t look now...but the sooner we address who it is we want to be and how to get there.....

Time is Flying by !
Don’t look now...but the sooner we address who it is we want to be and how to get there...the sooner we’ll actually get there! Just some points to ponder.

~> What is our customer experience?

~> Meetings...too many? Not enough? Waste of time?

~> What makes our product/service any different from the competition?

~> How effective is our hiring system & protocol?

~> How would we rate our training program?

~> How much actual “Managing” are our managers doing? What is their typical day?

~> How effective is our monthly score card? What aren’t we measuring?

~> Our performance reviews: Effective? Do they even exist?

~> What’s the “mood” of the troops? What do we do to manage it?

Just a mere sampling...I’d be glad to help...but let’s get on it!

“Why?”
..without question the most powerful 3-letter word ever! It penetrates our very fiber & makes us step back & review: WHY do we do particular things? WHY don’t we do particular things? If we don’t ask WHY we simply become apathetic...we’re stuck on a Merry Go Round !

Hang around with a 5 year old kid and witness the master of “WHY” ? At your work, ask: “Why do we need this report?” “Why do we have this meeting?” Think about it...watch peoples reaction to your innocent question. It’s as if you just committed treason.

Or with your family, your kids, your S.O., ask WHY do we? ...WHY don’t we?...all with the non-aggressive curiosity of a 5 year old. There’s an old story of the 5 year old girl who asks her mother as she is preparing an Easter dinner; “Mom! Why do you cut the ends off of the ham before you put it in the oven?” The mother stutters for a minute and utters, “Well, it let’s the juices in...or something like that. Your Gramma always did it that way, go ask her.” Little girl goes to Gramma and asks her the same question, “Why do you cut the ends off of the ham before you put it in the oven?”
The Gramma stutters a bit and replies, “Well, I think there’s a lot of reasons but you ought to go ask your Great Gramma because she always did it & I just watched her.” Little girl goes to Great Gramma and asks, “Na Na, I just asked my Mom & Gramma why they cut the end’s off of the ham before they put it in the oven...and they said it had something to do with the juices...or with the heat...is that right?” And Na Na replies, “Heavens No! The only reason I cut the end’s off the ham was because my oven was too small!”

DECOMPRESSION:

: A gradual reduction of pressure on persons in a state of HIGH pressure

Immediately, what comes to mind are deep sea divers. But, that’s not what I’m referring to. I am referring to walking into the house after a tough day at work or driving kids and going to a quiet place with an agreement that no one says anything for 7 minutes. And this goes for every member of the family.

Imagine the impact! Rather than walking through the door and start yelling “Why are all of the kid’s bikes in the street.” Or “You didn’t tell me there was a soccer game tonight" ... "I texted you 5 times”...”God, our communication just sucks!” And that is the emotional kick-off for the evening. Instead try this: when you walk in the door, find an out-of-way spot & take 7 minutes of absolute silence to breathe deeply & dump the pressures of the day & consider how you want your evening to be. Trust me; your welcome is going to be incredibly warmer & may extend into the wee hours.

Next, develop a practice involving everyone in your department at work to agree that everyone takes the first 7 minutes of arrival to not talk. That time is reserved for state of the mind adjusting...reviewing the day...choosing your demeanor. Otherwise you know what happens...you don’t even have your coat off and 3 people are at your door...or grabbing laptops & running into a meeting (which is always lame anyway)...and that is the emotional kick-off for the day. Good times!!!!

Imagine the difference in your state of mind in both cases...and it only costs 7 minutes. I promise this will be life changing event. My focus working with businesses involves everything from performance management to intense Strategic Planning & I have the pleasure of knowing that I have helped make over 200 plus businesses very successful. But, I have failed... if I don’t make people feel better about what they do & how they do it.

Maybe You Are Losing IT!

Firstly...you’re going to have to bury that computer. It has become like your “Kitchen Junk Drawer.” Don’t try and deny or hide it! Get a piece of paper & do an inventory of that kitchen drawer. You’ll be amazed at the crazy stuff you’ve kept. And now do the same thing with your computer and iphone. And it’s ridiculous to even call it a “computer” when on average you only actually “Compute” about 10% of the time & usage.

The metaphor for the computer is based on a 50’s Mad Men strategy for organization. It’s like their desk top with folders on it...& then there’s files inside the folders. And then they would take their folders once a year to the storage room in the basement and there they would sit forever. Hmmm...sound familiar?

Honestly, for your own piece of mind clean both of them up...throw stuff out...anything you haven’t used in the past year...pitch it. It hurts so good!

So often, we are disappointed in the behaviors, actions or apparent failures of someone else ...
When in reality, not only did they not understand our expectations, they weren’t even aware of them ...
Because we never clearly thought through the specifics of them ourselves.
