Happy Halloween!! As a Human Resources Professional, I encourage employees to dress-up to commemorate this day. Halloween is intended as a light-hearted, inclusive, secular celebration. However, Employers should realize that not everyone celebrates Halloween, so no employee should feel pressured or compelled to dress in costume, or to participate. Please do not wear any costumes that are at odds with your employer’s diversity or equal employment opportunity policies. While the dress code may be somewhat relaxed for Halloween, keep in mind that appropriate attire is still expected. Skimpy, revealing or overtly sexy costumes will should not be permitted. A Halloween costume that is perfect for barhopping may create a hostile work environment when it’s worn to the annual workplace Halloween potluck lunch. Skimpy costumes can result in sexual harassment that continues long after the party is over…or they can be interpreted as sexual harassment of other employees. Sorry to be a “Debbie Downer”.
