As we enter into the holiday season and the coming of a new year, I wanted to share some things to consider as they are a reminder that one of the most powerful things you can do to finding fulfillment is taking good care of yourself.
Self-care is as individual as each of us. I can't tell you what your body, mind, and soul needs. That's why the most important advice I can give you is this: Listen to yourself. You are your greatest source of wisdom. You actually know exactly what you need to feel your best day in day out. Do that!
However, over the years of coaching clients, I've come up with a self-care framework that you can use as a starting point to make self-care a priority in your life:
Body:
⢠Sleep enough. For most people, that's 8 hrs minimum. Don't tell yourself that lie that you can manage on 6 hrs. It's very likely not true.
⢠Eat whole foods with a focus on fresh vegetables and fruits. Load up on vegetables at every meal (especially greens). Avoid processed foods, especially refined sugar, additives, and bad fats.
⢠Cut out the foods that cause you troubles. Get tested or do an elimination diet to find out your personal troublemakers. Start with having a look at the most common culprits: gluten, dairy, soy, caffeine, alcohol.
⢠Move daily. It doesn't matter as much what you do, just move. Find something you love and do it multiple times per week. When you don't work out, prioritize walking and stretching throughout the day.
⢠Listen to your body: Feeling tired? Rest. Feeling hungry? Eat. Feeling sick? Stay at home. Although this is Self-Care 101, it is probably the hardest thing to do.
Mind:
⢠Create a morning ritual: What do you need to feel motivated & excited for the day? Think about including the following aspects: meditation, morning journaling, affirmations, visualizations or simply listening to your favorite music while getting ready or sitting down with a cup of tea for 5 minutes to plan your day â whatever it is that gets you in the right mindset to tackle anything that comes your way.
⢠Manage distractions. Distractions make us unproductive and anxious. Identify whatever it is that truly distracts you from focusing on the task at hand and set up a rule to deal with it. This might be setting fixed times to check your email, turning off notifications, having a designated office space when working from home or putting on your headphones to signal you are in âNO DISTRACTIONâ mode.
⢠Calm your Monkey Mind. Yoga, meditation and walking in nature can be great ways to calm down your thoughts and recenter yourself.
⢠Get out of your head. What are activities that you can do the recharge your mind after a long week? What are the things that truly make you stop worrying about your 2-Do list? Make it a habit to do them every weekend so you start the week refreshed. Whether it is going for a long run, spending some quality time with your loved ones, watching a great movie or going on a weekend trip.
⢠Get some perspective. What can you do to regularly reflect on your week, your work, your relationships and everything else that is going on? Think of coming up with a set of reflective questions for a weekly recap or just scheduling some thinking time for yourself every week.
Soul:
⢠Practice gratitude. Design your own gratitude ritual â trust me, it will do wonders for your soul. Whether it is thinking about the things you are grateful for whenever you want to complain about something or writing 3 things you are grateful for in your journal every night â there are endless ways to invite gratitude into your daily life.
⢠Connect with loved ones. Spending with our loved ones, especially if it includes physical touch like cuddling is true chicken soup for the soul. But even if it's just taking a few minutes to send an encouraging text to your brother before his exam, call your Mum or send a funny pic to your BFF - connecting to others makes us feel good.
⢠Schedule Soul-Time: What are the things that make you feel warm, loved and cozy? Maybe itâs taking a bubble bath, getting a massage, cycling through dreamy towns (my favorite one!), reading a novel or laughing with your girlfriends at brunch. Make a list of the things that nourish your soul and do one thing every week (and maybe even a small thing every day.)
⢠Trust your intuition. Follow your heart.
⢠Be kind to yourself. When you are suffering, be aware of your pain and be kind to yourself. Ask yourself: What can I do right now to give me the warm care my soul is longing for? And then go and do it. Sometimes we suffer because we made a mistake. But even then, what your soul really needs is being treated with kindness. Make it a habit to forgive yourself and treat yourself with compassion every time you want to bury yourself in self-hatred and criticism. Return to a place of self-love and worthiness and then reflect on what you could have done better and go and make things right.
We need a strong and healthy body to create the life of our dreams. Because when our bodies are tired from working too much and sleeping too little and sluggish from not moving enough and eating high-sugar and high-fat foods without much nutritional value, we can tell yourself all the affirmations we want but we won't be able to create success in your life. We need to take care of our body first. Our body is our vessel to take the necessary actions to achieve our goals. Don't neglect it!
We need a calm, focused and inspired mind to go after our dreams. Because when our mind is jumping around like a monkey, from one thought to the next, constantly distracted by everything that's going on around it, it becomes impossible to keep our eyes on the prize and diligently work towards our dreams.
And last but not least, we need a happy soul to stay persistent on the path to our goals. Because when we deprive our soul of the things that truly make her happy and only focus on the future, we become frustrated, impatient and unfulfilled.
Hereâs to reaching the life of your dreamsâŚ.
