So proud of the Forest City Action Team! These women make things happen and this beautiful sculpture at the FC trailhead is just the latest example!

Wow…This will be on the WNEP 6 o’clock news tonight! Today was the unveiling of my Rail-Trail sculpture in Forest City! The ceremony was held at the Forest City trailhead along with the awesome journalist Emily Kress WNEP from WNEP-TV, the Rail-Trail Directors and Council, the Commissioner and a big group of great people all came to check the sculpture out along with a new sign detailing the history of the D&H Rail-Trail and the area railroads and plans for future additions. It was such a wonderful time and beautiful day to be out! Thank you to everyone who came out and spent some time at the trailhead! It’s such an honor to be the first artist to add a piece to this amazing trail and look forward to the next one!

York County Economic Alliance does Trail Towns right! They continue to invest in their towns and have reinvigorated and revitalized seven towns across York County. Eastwick Solutions is proud to have helped Trail Towns get started!

We are celebrating 3 years of the York County Trail Towns Program! The York County Economic Alliance launched the “Trail Towns Program”, to leverage the York Heritage Rail Trail as a platform and driver for economic development in towns located along or near the popular multi-use trail. Partnering with York County Parks, the York County Rail Trail Authority, Explore York County PA , and our municipal partners, the Trail Towns Program is a collaborative process with outreach to local governments, residents and business owners in order for each town to reach its potential as a vibrant hub for trail users.

Trails are economic development engines! Gunpowder Falls Brewing (opened last week!) is just one of the many companies that recognize the value of trails; New Freedom is a great example of how towns can leverage the trail to attract new businesses and ventures. It was just 3 years ago that we worked with the York County Economic Alliance, implementing Trail Towns and Trail Friendly Business Program, but these programs have opened the doors for new opportunities. Kudos to the York County Trail Towns Program!

In the old days, “take a hike” was an insult! You said it to a pesky person to encourage them to go away; it turns out it was great advice!
National Trails Day is June 3, 2023, a time to get outside and explore nearby to not-too-far-away nature. Pennsylvania has great trails lined with friendly towns to grab a meal or a beer along the way! These include some great rail-trails (i.e., for railroad tracks turned into trails) to choose from! If in doubt, look for your nearest river, and you will likely find an adjacent rail trail. Schuylkill River, Delaware River, Lehigh River and Lackawanna River offer exceptional trail experiences winding through small towns, big cities, and lots of green in between. You can also find trails or walkways in local and county parks and local nature conservancies to explore new possibilities and adventures.

The benefits of walking 150 minutes a week are well documented to improve your physical and mental health. In addition to increasing cardiovascular fitness and strengthening bones, women who take a brisk walk 20 minutes a day have about a 3% lower risk of breast cancer than women who aren’t active. The impact on mental health is even more impressive: 25% lowered risk of depression among adults, and 1 in 9 cases of depression could potentially be prevented!
So, be inspired to “take a hike” or even a walk and celebrate National Trails Day with a walk, short or long, but get outside and enjoy!

Eastwick is spearheading a groundbreaking project with South Mountain Partnership (SMP) to assess the overall health of this unique region in southcentral PA across multiple areas is a collaborative network of people and organizations protecting and promoting the agricultural, natural, cultural, and recreational resources of the region in Adams, Cumberland, Franklin, and York counties. Working with a steering committee of local planners and various stakeholders, Eastwick is identifying key issues and metrics to measure how the region is doing regarding land preservation, water quality, farmland, open space, and many more. Eastwick will also provide recommendations to address these challenges for decision-makers as part of this work. We have teamed up with Cedarville Engineering Group and Gaadt Perspectives to create a “report card” reflecting the status of specific nature-based and human-created assets that make the South Mountain region an exceptional place to live, work and play. This inaugural report card will provide a foundation to build on for future generations and provide insights for local government to shape policy.
