Fallen leaves are gardener's gold! 🍁 Make the most of this abundant annual windfall by mixing shredded leaves right into your garden. Next spring, your soil will be teeming with earthworms and other beneficial organisms. Note: when adding shredded leaves right to the soil, include some slow-release nitrogen fertilizers to help the leaves decompose and to ensure that soil microbes don’t use all of the available nitrogen. 🍂

Some beautiful autumn shots of the 10.5-acre Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira, New York. Established during the Civil War, this historic site is uniquely known for containing the graves of Confederate soldiers. Due to space limitations, the cemetery was closed to new burials until a vital Columbarium project was completed in 2005.

Our team was proud to be hired by Eagle Design Inc. and the National Cemetery Administration (NCA) U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to bring this expansion to life.

The Design Challenge & Solution:
The concept focused on constructing new columbarium walls along the cemetery's perimeter, which backs up directly to residential properties. We designed five high walls that serve a dual purpose: expanding the cemetery's capacity while creating an elegant visual and sound barrier for both visitors and neighboring residents.

Fun Fact: The adjacent public Woodlawn Cemetery is also the final resting place of legendary author Mark Twain.

Our fim led a multidisciplinary team to develop revitalization plans for seven aging commercial districts throughout Abington Township. Each plan examined the unique character of the district, land uses, streetscape improvements, historic features, pedestrian connections, and opportunities for economic growth.

Through community input and collaboration, the plans addressed key design priorities and established strategies for implementation, including preliminary costs and potential funding sources.

The revitalization of Keswick illustrates the impact of thoughtful planning. New street trees, sidewalks, lighting, benches, traffic-calming measures, and pedestrian connections helped create a more inviting streetscape, while new retail and restaurants complemented the revitalized Keswick Theater and strengthened the community as a destination.

Maple Hill is a historic 36-acre property with the ruins of one of Montgomery County’s oldest houses. When CVDA began the project, much of the landscape consisted of disturbed woodlands and overgrown meadows.

CVDA developed a comprehensive Master Plan addressing both the property’s natural areas and the formal landscape surrounding the new home. During construction, an extensive invasive plant management program helped restore the site’s native forest canopy and reestablish healthy, sustainable meadows reflective of its historic character.

The landscape plan also introduced a new entrance drive and thoughtfully designed gardens, including large-scale trees that will mature to create a timeless setting for the home.

A thoughtful balance of landscape restoration, sustainability, and timeless design helped reconnect this historic property with its natural character.
