Can plant DNA extraction be simpler? 🌱🧬

Researchers working with native Peruvian cotton developed a modified CTAB and silica-column method designed to extract high-quality DNA without requiring liquid nitrogen or high- and low-temperature processing.

The resulting DNA produced clear PCR bands with RAPD and ISSR markers and was suitable for Sanger sequencing, demonstrating that a simpler and more economical workflow can still support downstream molecular applications.

IBI Scientific was also part of the research workflow: researchers used IBI Scientific agarose during gel electrophoresis to evaluate the extracted DNA.

What could limit MK-2048 for HIV prevention?

Researchers investigating MK-2048 found that the HIV integrase inhibitor is a substrate of two important efflux transporters, P-gp and BCRP. Because both are highly expressed in the female reproductive tract, their activity may influence MK-2048 concentrations in target tissue.

The experimental workflow also incorporated equipment from IBI Scientific: researchers used an IBI Scientific vacuum manifold to rapidly filter and wash samples during the membrane vesicle uptake assay.

The study offers insight into how drug transport across biological barriers may influence potential HIV prevention strategies.

Plants that look different aren't necessarily different species. 🌱

Researchers studying Pediomelum tenuiflorum combined morphological and genetic evidence to investigate variation among its different forms. Their findings did not support separating the morphotypes into distinct species. Instead, the evidence points to an interconnected evolutionary history involving extensive crossing, hybridization with related Pediomelum species, and backcrossing.

IBI Scientific was part of the research workflow, too: researchers used the IBI Plant Genomic DNA Mini Kit to extract genomic DNA from 147 Pediomelum samples for the study.

It’s a great example of how molecular tools can uncover relationships that plant appearance alone can't fully explain.

In the article "Expression of hemerythrin-like genes from the obligate aerobe Myxococcus xanthus improves the growth of the industrially relevant Gluconobacter oxydans," researchers explored how oxygen-binding proteins could improve bacterial growth under oxygen-limited conditions. Their findings demonstrated higher final cell densities and faster generation times, offering new insight into strategies that may enhance industrial microbial production.
