With the warmer temperatures and brighter sun that marks the summer months, your lawn can quickly dry out and your grass may start to die. That's why many of us water our lawns - to keep the grass alive and keep your lawn looking lush and green.

Spotted Lanternflies infestations have reached Fairfax County, in addition to Loudoun and Prince William counties. These invasive pests have no natural predators or diseases, and they are spreading through the eastern United States.

If you see a Spotted Lanternfly, take the following steps:

Kill the insect(s) if you can. Squash, stomp, pinch, and deposit in the trash. Scrape egg masses off and deposit in rubbing alcohol and dispose the container in the trash. Then, report the location and date of any sightings to iNaturalist through its mobile app or to the county’s Urban Forestry Department by email to [email protected].

Spotted lanternflies feed on the sap of a plant and can cause significant damage. They feed on over 70+ plants, and have been causing damage to vineyards, nurseries, and people's backyards.

If you're reading up on lawn care, you'll often hear the terms cool season grasses and warm season grasses. What exactly does this mean?

Cool season grasses grow best in areas of the country that experience tremendous temperature fluctuations: cold, freezing winters and hot, dry summers. They grow in the top 2/3 of the country. Virginia is in the middle third of the country, called the "Transition Zone." We can grow both cool-season and warm-season grasses in our lawns. The most common types of cool-season grasses are Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, fine fescue, and tall fescue. Often, the seeds of these grass types are mixed together for different needs and uses.

Is the grass always greener on the other side? You may be wondering why your neighbor has greener grass than you do. There are a host of reasons why this happens, but at the top of the list is watering properly!

If you're watering your grass by hand, it's a good idea to thoroughly water your grass less often, but for extended periods to encourage healthy root growth. Try watering 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week. The best time to water is in the early morning so that the water has a chance to sink into the ground before evaporating from the hot sun.
