The Art of Defining Your Problems 🎨😌
In the fast-paced world of social impact, there’s a pervasive rush to slap solutions on problems like bandaids on a scraped knee. But here’s the kicker: sometimes, we’re not even sure where the scrape is, or if it’s a scrape at all. This enthusiastic but often misguided approach can lead us to solutions that miss the mark, or worse, sprinkle salt on the wound. So, how do we avoid falling into this trap? The answer is deceptively simple and devilishly difficult: define the problem. Really define it.
Defining the problem is like mapping out the treasure hunt before you start digging. It involves understanding not just the “what” but the “why,” the impact, and the constraints we’re operating under. This isn’t just busywork; it’s the cornerstone of effective problem-solving. Let’s break it down.
🕵️♀️ Identify the Problem: Imagine you’re a detective (hat and magnifying glass optional). Your first step? Naming the culprit.
🌷 Understand the Root Cause: Now, dig deeper. What’s really causing the problem? This might involve some data-digging and analysis.
📝 Define the Impact: Gauge the problem’s effect on your mission.
📍 Identify Constraints: Every superhero has their kryptonite, and every problem has its constraints. Time, budget, resources – what’s holding you back? Knowing this shapes your battle strategy.
🗣️ Formulate a Problem Statement: Craft a statement that encapsulates the problem, its roots, its impact, and its constraints.
💌 Communicate the Problem: Share your problem statement far and wide (well, at least with all relevant stakeholders). Ensure everyone knows what dragon you’re all setting out to slay.
Here’s to our shared journey of problem-solving. May our definitions be as clear as our convictions, and our solutions as impactful as our intentions.
