Got a very grateful call from a local customer today.

They are far away on a vacation escaping our cold temperatures. This morning they received a notification from there Nextec security/Home Automation system that temperatures were dropping quickly in their home and that the boiler had failed.

They were able to dispatch their local HVAC Company, disarm the security system, remotely open the front door lock, and watch for them on the exterior cameras.

As our customers are not due to return for a couple more weeks, without the monitoring they would likely returned to a very serious situation with broken water pipes and flooding that would have frozen, as well as a host of other problems,

While unfortunate that they had the boiler issue (fairly common), we are very happy that they have the sense of relief that everything is taken care of and they can get back to their vacation.

This time of year we tend to spend alot more time indoors watching TV and movies. There is alot of great ways to "spruce up" the experience. Below I have linked a basic explanation of some common terminology and concepts with Home Theater.

Cool Product :: Wireless Driveway Sensor

This wireless driveway sensors detects vehicles (and not deer or other large animals in our area) from up 600 feet away from your home or business. It has a probe that is buried parallel to the driveway and detects vehicles with approximately 10-12 feet.

The probe is attached to the wireless transmitter box by 50 feet of direct burial cable. The transmitter is waterproof and works well in wet and cold outside conditions.

The transmitter communicates with a wall receiver that plugs into a standard electrical outlet and plays one of 4 different tones when a vehicle is detected. The tone and volume is adjustable on the receiver.

Nextec can also utilize the receivers on board relays to integrate with your security system or camera surveillance system. For example, when a vehicle is detected on your driveway Nextec can set up your system to begin recording on your front of house security camera.

Do You Need To Pay Monthly Security Monitoring Fee’s.. Maybe not...

Many people with security systems in the area pay monthly monitoring fees of $20-30 dollars a month or more. While having central station monitoring may be the best choice for some people, many Nextec customers choose to have their security systems call them and their family and friends directly. Not only does this save them money every month, but we often set them up with functionality that a “standard security system” does not have.

* Many of our customers get a phone call or text alarm if the temperature drops below a certain point indicating there is a furnace problem (which is very common up here).

* Many of our customers have water sensors in areas around an upstairs laundry room, and will get an alert if there is a water pipe issue that could do major damage to their home.

* Most of our customers have the ability to remotely arm and disarm their security systems from their iPhone or Android based phones, allowing authorized people into their houses and then rearmed when they are gone (such as house cleaners, contractors and family/friends checking on your home while you are vacation)

Something to consider…

Please contact me if you have any questions.

****** What size TV For Your Room? ******

Customers frequently ask me what the ideal size TV for their room or area. While the depends on a variety of variables including the aesthetics of the room etc . I will try and simplify it down to “ideal viewing”

Most Flat Panel TV’s have a resolution of 1080p, so I will use this as a reference. Although there are different opinions and methods I suggest the following rule of thumb. The best viewing distance is 1.5-2.5 times the diagonal measurement of the TV or 3 to 5 times the screen height (preferred). the advertised TV size is the diagonal measurement.

So to figure the best size TV based on where your seating is (or will be), just dust off your algebra skills. If we choose to calculate 4 times the screen height and the distance is 8 ft (96 inches) we get 4x=96 (where x is the ideal screen height) or x= 96/4 = 24 inches. This corresponds to a 42” flat panel which would be the ideal viewing size at that distance.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Here is a cool newer product that has been popular with our customers recently. It is a wall receptacle with 2 USB ports for charging iPad's, iPhone's, other Phones, GPS, digital camera's, etc. etc.

It has a charging current of 2.1 amps so it charges much faster than the little Apple ones that come with your phone.

Eliminates those ugly "wall warts" clogging up your outlets.

It is Decora style and is available in a variety of colors.
