One of the things I love most about my job is knowing that we play an important role in ensuring that a vessel's safety systems are functioning properly and that the crew can return home safely to their families.
But there is another part of my job that means just as much to me, and it has nothing to do with inspecting or servicing equipment.
It's being invited to sit down and share a meal with the crew.
People often don't realize that these men and women spend 3, 6, 9, 10 months, or even longer, away from their homes and families. They miss birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, and countless moments that many of us take for granted.
For many of these seafarers, one of the few comforts of home is sitting around a table, sharing a home-cooked meal, laughing, telling stories, and talking about whatever is happening in the world.
I've been fortunate enough to be welcomed to those tables as a guest on ships from all over the world. I've enjoyed incredible meals, experienced different cultures, and had conversations with people from places I may never get the opportunity to visit.
And every time, I walk away with a greater appreciation for the people who make the maritime industry what it is.
Here's something I wish more people understood:
Almost everything you purchase, whether it's from a local store, an online retailer, or a major supplier, has likely traveled aboard a ship at some point, whether as a finished product, raw material, or individual component.
Behind those products are hardworking seafarers who spend months away from the people they love to keep the world's supply chains moving.
So the next time you receive a package or purchase something from a store, take a moment to appreciate the men and women at sea who helped make it possible.
To every captain and crew who has welcomed me and the Baltimore Marine Safety team aboard, especially those who have invited us to share a meal at your table, thank you.
Your hospitality means more than you probably realize.
At Baltimore Marine Safety, we don't just service safety equipment. We help protect the people who keep the world moving.
Fair winds and following seas to all the seafarers out there. Stay safe, and may you always return home to your families. âš“
