It’s easy to think of a vineyard as one place.

In reality, every block has its own personality.

The top of the hill behaves differently than the bottom. One row ripens before another. Even vines planted side by side have their own pace.

That’s part of what keeps this work interesting.

Cody spends a lot of time walking these rows, and part of what he’s paying attention to is something we can’t see in the vines themselves: the rhythm of the sun and temperature.

Our east-facing vineyards in the Dundee Hills catch the morning sun, giving the vines plenty of light to develop flavor. As the day moves on, the afternoons and evenings cool down, creating the diurnal shift that helps preserve freshness while allowing the fruit to build complexity.

It’s a beautiful balance, warm days for flavor development, cool evenings for acidity and character. And Cody is out there, row by row, watching how the vines respond to it all.

We could probably write a long post about why we love Pinot Noir for international Pinot Noir day today, but if you know us, you already know. We like to think Chardonnay is pretty easy to get along with.

Seafood, grilled vegetables, roast chicken...sure.

But it’s just as happy with takeout on the back deck and friends who weren’t planning on staying this long.

That’s probably why we keep reaching for it.

Hedging is one of those jobs in the vineyard that continues to create the highest quality wine. By hedging the foliage we help remind the vine to focus on the fruit, we open up the canopy to stop disease pressure, improve airflow and keep the shoots out of the row so the tractor doesn’t damage all of our growing seasons delicate work. We do this about two times before harvest and every small detail always matters. 🚜

One of the things we love most about wine country is that it encourages you to slow down.

You take the longer route through the vineyard. You stay for one more glass. The conversation keeps going.

Before you know it, a couple of hours have passed and nobody seems to mind.

We could all use a little more of that.
