In our latest INPOWERD Perspective, Earl W. Shockley, President and CEO of INPOWERD LLC, shares insights from decades of operational, regulatory, and compliance experience to examine what organizations still misunderstand about enforcement, self-reporting, and defensible compliance programs.

This discussion goes far beyond audit preparation and paperwork. It explores how regulators evaluate management-in-control, why organizational maturity and culture influence outcomes, and what separates reactive compliance activities from sustainable, credible compliance programs.

As reliability, governance, and regulatory expectations continue to evolve, organizations must move beyond simply responding to issues and focus on building disciplined systems capable of identifying, understanding, correcting, and learning from risk before it escalates.

We invite you to read the full blog and consider what true management-in-control looks like within your organization.

NERC ALERT NOTICE: The North American Electric Reliability Corp. is in the “final stages of preparing to issue a Level 3 essential actions alert” related to large computational loads unexpectedly disconnecting from the grid, a NERC official confirmed to Utility Dive in an email Monday.

The alert is expected to be published May 4 and is the result of load loss events in both the Eastern and Texas interconnections that have occurred since 2022, according to a NERC board of trustees meeting agenda last week.

The reliability watchdog is concerned about a series of “widespread and unexpected” customer-initiated load reductions in 2024 and 2025 during which 1,000 MW or more dropped off the bulk power system.

The electric sector is entering a period of fundamental change.

In our latest INPOWERD Perspective, we examine how converging pressures, rapid demand growth, infrastructure constraints, regulatory evolution, and shifting cost dynamics are reshaping how the grid operates and how organizations must respond.

This is not simply a large-load issue. It is a system-level shift that is changing planning assumptions, redefining reliability risk, and elevating the role of leadership in navigating uncertainty.

Earl Shockley, INPOWERD’s President and CEO, shares his perspective on why the grid is becoming the constraint, what the emergence of concepts like the “Computational Load Entity” signals for the future, and how organizations must adapt to operate effectively in a more complex, less predictable environment.

We invite you to read the full blog and consider what this shift means for your organization.

Over the course of his four-decade career managing engineers and working in high-reliability environments, INPOWERD’s President and CEO Earl Shockley has observed a pattern that is rarely discussed but widely experience across technical organizations.

Many talented engineers enter the workforce exceptionally well prepared technically yet struggle during the early years of their careers. The issue is rarely intelligence or work ethic. More often, it is the transition from the structured academic environment into the complex realities of the corporate world.

In his latest blog, Earl discusses what he calls the professional readiness gap and why technical excellence alone does not fully prepare engineers for the environments they enter after graduation. The article explores the team dynamics, communication challenges, human drift factors, and leadership responsibilities that often shape early-career success.

This is not just an individual challenge. It is an organizational leadership issue. As Earl explains, organizations that want to develop the next generation of engineering talent must address this gap intentionally if they expect their teams to thrive in complex, high-reliability environments.
