In 1943, the US government begged Americans to grow food at home. They called them Victory Gardens. 20 million households answered. Together, they produced 40% of the nation's vegetables.

The government printed posters. Schools taught gardening. Neighborhoods competed for the best yields.

Today, in at least 17 US states, municipalities have made it illegal or heavily restricted to grow food in your front yard. People have been fined. Gardens have been bulldozed by code enforcement.

In 1943, growing your own food was patriotic.

In 2026, growing your own food is a code violation.

Nothing changed about the plants. Everything changed about who profits from what you eat.

If you’re seeing big, slow bumble bees this week… that’s a queen waking up from winter.

She’s alone.
She’s hungry.
And she’s looking for a place to start her new colony.

Early‑season queens are gentle and focused on survival, not stinging.
Most of the time they’re just warming up in the sun or searching for the first flowers of spring.

If you see one around your porch, shed, or yard, don’t spray.
She won’t stay long — and she’s one of the most important pollinators we have in Oklahoma.

A calm reminder:
Not every bee needs to be removed… but none of them need to be sprayed.

What I thought would be a routine job turned into one of the largest colonies I’ve pulled this season — nearly 6 feet of honeycomb packed deep inside the structure.

The bees were hot and defensive from the moment I opened it up. A couple hours in, they were so fired up I had to climb down the ladder and tape my suit shut at the wrists and ankles just to keep working safely.

Even with all that, I still removed the colony alive, cleaned out every bit of comb, and sealed the entry so they can’t return.

These big removals are tough, but saving the bees and restoring a home the right way is always worth it.

This one was fun! The first picture is from December and the rest are from this week. We knew their best chance at survival was to leave them be until spring. Now that they have a natural food source and lots of young bees, we relocated them to our apiary!
