Where are the Black men in PR? Meet Derek D. Ross -
Born in Low Moor, Va., and raised in Durham, N.C., Derek is a University of North Carolina Charlotte and Chapel Hill Alumnus.
For 15 years, Derek has been a trusted and reliable authority in branding and public relations serving clients in the sports and entertainment industry with a special focus on HBCU athletics, brands and events.
He has created and led the branding, marketing and public relations strategies for the biggest HBCU events in the country including the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (CIAA) Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament and Football Championship, the National Battle of the Bands and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
Derek works with his clients to curate concepts, content and conversations that create authentic connections while driving impact, revenue and results. In 2014, he launched into full-time entrepreneurship with his agency, The D² Group .
Derek has secured client placements in major publications such as Forbes, ESPN, USA Today, The Undefeated, ESSENCE and many more. He has been featured and seen in publications such as Rolling Out, EBONY, Uptown, Sister 2 Sister magazines.
Derek was honored as a 2017 Black Enterprise (BE) Modern Man of Distinction and served as a panelist at the 2018 Black Enterprise Entrepreneur Summit. In 2019, he was a recipient of the 2019 Excellence in Leadership Award for Entrepreneurship presented by the UNC Charlotte Black Alumni Chapter, and served as a panelist at the 2019 Build Your Own Brand Conference.
His motivation is creating opportunities for the next generation via mentorship/internships not readily accessible to Black students, as well as using his story and experiences as a source of inspiration, education and empowerment for others.
