Amo (.modjadji asked me “What are the 5 Pieces of Art that imitate this season of my life?”

Here’s my response:

Cuz my life is artsy, chaotic and full of friendship like Mavis, all of the Cleo Sol albums. All of them. Solange sang our generational forever mood and there is indeed ALOT to be Mad about. Kermit sun, Miss Piggy rising and Gonzo moon. And I dont even need to hear Jill’s album to know she bout to be strumming my pain with her fingers.

Also instead of zodiac signs, let’s describe ourselves as Muppets from now on.

In 7 days and 2 hours I’ll be performing* with and The Fire Ensemble at as part of season.

*In this case performing means giving a sermon on liberation and love. Because my ancestors got jokes and want more reasons for my mama to tell me I should go to seminary and start a church.

Get your tickets and join us on Saturday, January 17 at 7:30pm. Because these here truly are gathering times. Imma bring my best and I hope to share it with you.

It’s time for Afrodiasporic Film School!

A few weeks ago I talked about how I created an Afrodiasporic film self study. Several of yall asked for the syllabus so here it is for the Winter Quarter. I am taking two classes. We Gotta Have Spike Lee and Contemporary African Women Filmmakers.

Im committed to this because it’s what sets my heart alight. And I want to be a filmmaker that understands myself as part of a global context. I want to make art that moves and impacts culture diasporically. And that requires deep study. And that art is just good.

So if you’re interested and want to get into some Black film nerdery check out my substack where I have the course description and full syllabi linked. It’s also where I will post my weekly reflections about what I’m learning as well as some behind the scenes looks into my own work.

See you in class.

This video isn’t long enough for me to truly express the pleasure and joy and delight I felt directing Akeelah and the Bee at Raleigh Little Theater. Now, directing is hard work! Don’t let the smiles fool you. But it is gooood work. And it’s so much easier when you work with people you’re excited to labor alongside. And that was my experience. Every cast and crew member was integral to the success but also kind. It was a very kind process. And I think, more than anything, I want all of my actors, but especially the young ones, to know that we can make beautiful things and be kind to each other.

It was a great way to kick off 2025 and I am giddy with expectance as I await my next directing opportunity.

After 5 years away, MOJOAA Performing Arts Company revived Escape to Freedom, an interactive and immersive experience about slavery. I was nervous, to be honest. The world has changed so much in the last 5 years. But the truth needs no welcome. The truth just is. And Escape to Freedom was received with the heart and hunger it has always garnered. People desire opportunities for truth-telling. And we do just that.

And we will keep doing that until… well, until the ancestors say that part of our work is done.

I hope that you will join us next year. It, like all necessary art, will change you.

Before I was a board member, I was an artist—a Black artist—in Durham. And as such I have felt protective and so much love for Hayti Heritage Center. It is my honor to serve this sacred space as a board member and support its continued legacy.

On this Giving Tuesday, I invite you to join me in that endeavor.

Become a monthly sustainer for $19.75 a month (or more). If you can’t commit to being a sustainer, buy a ticket. If you can’t get a ticket, share this video so that as many folks as possible can share in the excitement of Hayti Heritage Center. Or do all three! Cuz abundance!

I can’t wait to catch a show with you this season or beam at you from the stage on June 19.

Here’s to 50 more!

(And a huge thank you to Ms. Valerie who opened up the building so I could run around with my camera.)
