As the summer winds down, and we prepare for the fall season, we're in a back-to-school mood. Marie Deveaux and I are planning a special, welcome home Women's Leadership Salon for 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟳𝘁𝗵 @ 𝟯𝗽𝗺 at The Frontier RTP.

We'll reflect on and share with each other:

💮 Resources, skills, and wisdom we need to add to our "backpack" for our next adventure.
💮 How we honor transitions and set intentions for what's next.

It's truly my honor of a lifetime to be awarded the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health's Harriet Hylton Barr Alumni Award for outstanding leadership and service. To have my life's work and impact recognized by my students, former professors, and fellow alum of my beloved alma mater is incredibly uplifting. I feel even more inspired to continue carrying on John Lewis' legacy of making "good trouble" and advancing equity, justice, and human rights for all. Thank you all. I am grateful to be in community with such committed global public health leaders who work tirelessly and with the utmost of integrity to realize the human right to health and create the world we all deserve to live in. These are particularly challenging times for women leaders. We're leading in workplaces and communities that don’t always value our ideas, talent, and impact, simply due to our gender. Organizations are backtracking on their diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments, despite overwhelming evidence that organizations with more diverse senior leadership and inclusive workplaces outperform their peers. By showing up for each other, sharing our challenges, and co-creating innovative solutions, we’re elevating women’s leadership, together.

This month, we’re taking a virtual field trip to explore leadership from different cultural perspectives. The U.S. Global Leadership Coalition (USGLC)'s Impact Forum 2026 was inspiring and invigorating, as participating actively in our democracy always is! It's been my honor to serve on USGLC's North Carolina Advisory Committee since 2017. USGLC President & CEO Liz Schrayer, congressional, and other leaders from a range of sectors shared important strategies to protect the vital, decades-long investments in U.S. development and diplomacy that strengthen the safety, security, economy, and health of people in the U.S. and around the world.

Our NC delegation advocated for strong, ethical US global leadership and support for U.S. international assistance with the staff of Senator Thom Tillis, Senator Ted Budd, Representative Valerie Foushee, Representative Chuck Edwards, and Representative Virginia Foxx. The data are clear: investments in development and diplomacy cost far less - in financial and human terms - than military intervention.

Our asks:
- Sustain funding for the U.S. International Affairs Budget.
- Establish strong oversight of U.S. international assistance funds.
- Create a bipartisan effort to modernize and strengthen the U.S. international affairs agencies and programs.

My appreciation to USGLC staff Jeremy Tolbert, Carey Campbell, Dana Bruce, and Tom Wilson and NC delegation members Ambassador (ret.) Deborah Malac, Scott Gibson, Larken Egleston, and others.

This is what I shared with the circle of women who gathered to exchange inspiring poems and quotes, boundary-enforcing strategies, and leadership challenges and dreams.

Marie Deveaux and I were delighted to co-facilitate this group of incredible leaders in a sunlit circle of cozy couches and chairs that felt so much like a salon.

🌷 We exchanged poems that cracked open our hearts.
🌷 We shared strategies to uphold the boundaries we need to stay well and aligned.
🌷 We cared and listened deeply.
🌷 We offered support, laughter, and tissues for the tears.
🌷 We elevated each other's leadership brilliance.

🥰 This is my dream come true. All of it.

"We value diversity, but not at the expense of merit and excellence." How often have we heard organizational leaders express that sentiment without realizing that they are perpetuating harmful biases and a false dichotomy between diversity and meritocracy? What's true is that advancing inclusive excellence and equity are mission critical and good for business and our society.
