Tall Cedars Counseling

Tall Cedars Counseling Counseling & Consulting I am a clinical mental health counselor, coach, and consultant with over 25+ years experience in the human services sector.

My passion is trauma work--whether it is helping individuals heal and recover or working with organizations to improve services to trauma-survivors. Originally from Virginia, my family and I now call the Pacific Northwest our home. When I'm not working or spending time with my family, I enjoy walks in the woods, baking, trying new foods, dabbling in crafts, and reading everything from biographies

to fantasy novels. Counseling: I provide individual counseling to people age 16 and up as well as couples counseling. Currently these services are offered via telehealth to residents of Washington state. I also offer walk-and-talk therapy (weather permitting) in and around the Seattle area. My approach to counseling is integrative which means I match the tools and models I'm trained in to best meet the needs of my clients. I have received specialized training in couples work (Gottman), trauma treatment (T-CBT, IFS), and EMDR. I enjoy working with clients on relationship issues, trauma recovery, life transitions, grief and loss, teen issues, mood disorders, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, interpersonal violence, parenting, and sexuality. I am passionate about decolonizing mental health services and attuned to the needs of individuals and communities who have experienced historical trauma and oppression. As we work together, I welcome your questions and feedback to help align and attune our work and relationship. Whether you are new to counseling and wondering what this is all about or want to grow work you’ve already done, I’m committed to providing a welcoming, nonjudgmental space where we can build a therapeutic relationship rooted in compassion, curiosity, and connection. Coaching: Along with mental health counseling services, I also provide coaching services for adult individuals who are navigating life changes, feeling burnt out in their careers, need support setting boundaries, or want to grow their relationship skills personally or professionally. I am passionate about supporting people in helping professions including human service professionals, first-responders, and educators. Coaching services are available via telehealth to anyone in the US. Consulting: In my consulting work, I used evidence-based best practices to support organizations to increase their awareness and understanding of trauma, its effects, and strategies to create workplaces and service-delivery models that are both trauma-informed and trauma-responsive. Consulting includes assessment, training, implementation support, and coaching.

Therapy can be a great place to notice patterns and begin to make a shift toward something new. Experiences of trauma can often result in feeling as if we are stuck in survival mode, long after the original threat has passed.

As a social justice–informed mental health counselor, I affirm the inherent dignity, worth, and humanity of every person. I believe that each individual’s mental health is shaped not only by personal experiences, but also by the social, cultural, political, and economic systems in which they live. *Healing cannot be separated from justice.*

I am committed to creating therapeutic spaces that honor people’s identities, lived experiences, and resilience, while recognizing the impact of oppression, trauma, and inequity. I strive to practice with humility, curiosity, and accountability, knowing that my role is not to fix or define others, but to walk alongside them as they reclaim their voice, agency, and capacity for connection.

Affirming human dignity means centering consent, safety, and choice; challenging systems that harm; and advocating for conditions in which people and communities can truly thrive. Mental health care must be accessible, culturally responsive, and rooted in respect for the full complexity of human experience. Every person deserves to be seen, believed, and supported—not despite who they are, but because of who they are.

Just a quick note to let folks know that my home office and physical office space are safe from the floods that have seriously impacted the Snoqualmie Valley community and others around the state. At this time, it is not possible to access the Duvall office unless you are already in Duvall, however, the roads are predicated to open again over the weekend. If there are any road closures or anticipated flooding next week, I'll be sure to reach out about virtual appointments, rescheduling, etc. Hoping everyone across our state who has been affected by flooding receives the support and care they need to recover!

"Dormant memory traces stored in the hippocampus become active only when triggered, then merge with general knowledge and current context.
This blending process reshapes the memory, sometimes adding or altering details without our awareness."

Understanding the relationship between trauma and memory is at the core of EMDR therapy. By helping the brain process painful memories in a safe, structured way, EMDR reduces distress, strengthens resilience, and supports long-term emotional recovery. Many people experience meaningful shifts in how they think, feel, and respond to triggers — often more quickly than with traditional talk therapy alone. EMDR reminds us that healing is possible, and that our brains are capable of remarkable transformation with the right support. 💛✨

Why Memories Change: How the Brain Rewrites the Past

Researchers report that episodic memories evolve because the brain reconstructs past events rather than retrieving exact copies.

Dormant memory traces stored in the hippocampus become active only when triggered, then merge with general knowledge and current context.

This blending process reshapes the memory, sometimes adding or altering details without our awareness.

The review highlights why memory accuracy varies and why recollection can shift across time, mood, and circumstance.
