We had alot of very good office people over the years that mades heads and tails out of our sales and got things straightened out . We also really didn't have that many clerks overs the years, I was the first one followed by Mike Conter who doubled has our skidloader operator ,Randy, Mark Schilling and Doug Clemens pretty much handled the duties over the years.
Our first auctioneer Randy wanted to go with an experienced and he could not have found a better one, Ken Lahr widely reguarded has the best livestock auctioneer ever in the tristate area did our sales at the beginning. Dean Leonard took over for a short time until I took in 2021. Over the years we have had only two others fill in Doug Clemens has done 3 sales and Ed Hess did one.
Some of the more interesting things over the years is how I would represent the hay. I remember has we walked up to this one load of really bad stuff moldy, rotten basically manure one of our regular buys says to me before I start what can you possibly say that good about this load.. After i read the info on the card I said to the crowd " I will guarantee it was good when it was cut but once happened since i don't know.". Then another time when i walked up to this load of CRP that contained multiflower roses weeds and tree sapplings. I said normally I can always say the hay was good when it was cut but I can't say that about this load. Then I stated whatever the cows won't eat you got firewood.
One year hay was really cheap and the damaged hay was really hard to move. i remember this one load which was awfull I backed it down from $20 to 10 to $5 and no takers so I said free for the hauling and you got the money trying then to get $2.50 / ton. Kenny Ellerbach put a single finger in the air and I sold it for $1/ ton the lowest price ever.
On the flip side I think it was 2013 there was one sale I started every load of big squares at $300/ ton top was $465/ ton, I started every load of round bales at $200 / ton with the top $365/ ton.
The highest priced ever was actaully straw sold by the bale. the bales weigted 400 lbs each and it sold for $127.50/ bale or $637.50 / ton.
I always tried to get has much has possible for the hay and at the same time if we saw damage when it was off loaded we would be honest and tell our buyers and mark it on the lot card. The other day one of our customers posted on here thanks for running an honest auction. It was nice to hear that people recognized that we did.
Has an auctioneer I want to tell the buyers I never once ran you unless i had a bid in my pocket because i too sat on the other side for many years and always hated when someone would chase me on items I was bidding on.

Our deepest sympathies to the Lahr family

Commentary= The Hess family. 75 years ago OJ Hess started the Dyersville Sales barn at it's current location. Over the next 9 decades the salebarn economic impact on the city of Dyersville was like no other business in history when it comes to shaping what Dyersville looks like today. The salebarn was a draw farmers came to town to do business and other business followed, The new cars dealers, implement dealers, vets and vet supply stores opened plus feed dealers and farm supply stores all came to Dyersville because this is where the locals all came to do their business. Can you imagine how different Dyersville would look today if the salebarn had went to New Vienna or another nearby towns.
And why was the salebarn and sales company so successful over the years is because the Hess family OJ, Jerry and Randy worked there asses off to get every nickel they could for the sellers and provided a free . open and honest marketplace where supply and demand met. They did it right. Next week Randy will be joining his 98 year old father (Jerry) in retirement . It's been a hell of a run since 1949 congratulations to the Hess family on a job well done.

Our first sale was Feb 19,1999 we had 87 tons. Top was 97.50/ ton on 138 rfv 2nd crop big squares sold by the Schwers Bros from Luxemburg. Since then we have had over 1 million tons go thru our sale and we are so thankful not to have anyone hurt or killed. Our skidloader operators over the years did a great job.
Our first one was John Gates (Randy's father in law) very nice man and did a great job.
"Iron" Mike Conter took over after John was there till 2004. He also doubled has a clerk during the sale. Did a great job for many years.
Jared Deutmeyer was there for many years and probably handled the most hay of anyone and was probably the fastest operator we ever had.
Dave Schrobilgen , Schroby took over in 2017 and has been with us since.
We also had many part time people over the years who helped us in the busy seasons Will Juergens, Jerry Pins,, Chris Habel who all did a fine job. I know I'm missing some people but thank you to all on a job well done.

I want to take a minute today to remember some of our great truckers who over the years made Dyersville Sales Co hay auction . Without truckers nothing gets moved and we were blessed to have some very good ones.
Roger Graf was one of our first longtime semi drivers who did an outstanding job while he hasn't hauled much hay lately the Graf family is still represented very well with Bill and Brandon doing a great job for us today.
The Kamiller family Fred, Taz and Reesen all have been there done a great job and we thank them very much.
Mark Schilling he's been here forever I think he goes with the place. Thanks Mark for everything you do.
Dale and Kenny Ellerbach two of the nicest and hard working people you will ever meet. if you needed to get your big squares home before the rain these were the guys you would get.
The same can be said about Frank Helle hauled hay for almost 25 years until he retired and was always known for getting it done.
Greg Glawe a busy man who was never too busy to get it done. Thanks Greg
Andy Heitzman this is the person who is responsible for Dubuque county flies biting people. A couple of years ago Andy pulled into the auction and his truck was full of those mean Clayton county flies and those flies taught our Dubuque county flies how to bite. LOL Andy is a great guy and a wonderful person and does an excellent job, thank you Andy.
The following truckers are gone but not forgotten
Dave Rea he brought us one of the first out of state loads we had. Rea trucking hauled loads in and out for years and were greatly appreciated.
Dallas Fiscus , everytime i saw Dallas it was with a smile on his face. One of the nicest most honest people and one hard working son of a gun you will ever meet. He hauled western hay into our auction for years and he really helped us to get into the high end dairy hay market. God bless you.
Last but not least Ray Reinert, had a lot of fun with Ray over the years one week he was complaining about not getting many loads. So I said Ray why not have a trucking special? he said what would I do" I said charge them double on the first load then haul the second one free." the next week was a sale after Labor day and the Ray Reinert Trucking special was born.
These are just some of or great truckers i now I have missed some but without truckers things don't move. these folks here are the reason I fought so hard with the help of then former state representive and now US Congresswoman Ashley Hinson we were able to eliminate the need for permits for oversize loads of hay straw and stalks, At one time you needed a permit for state roads county roads (each county) and city streets, the DOT had a field day but thanks to Gov. Reynolds that money grab was ended and truckers were nolonger being punished for being on the wrong road with the wrong permit.
