It’s Carpenter Bee season! Carpenter bees are large, solitary bees belonging to the genus Xylocopa. They are known for their ability to bore into wood to create nesting galleries, which can sometimes cause structural damage to wooden buildings, decks, and outdoor furniture. Unlike social bees, carpenter bees do not live in colonies; instead, each female typically constructs and provisions her own nest.
Carpenter bees play an important ecological role as pollinators, contributing to the reproduction of many flowering plants and crops. They are often mistaken for bumblebees but can be distinguished by their smooth, shiny black abdomens. While males may exhibit territorial hovering behavior, they lack stingers and pose little threat to humans. Effective management of carpenter bee activity often involves preventative measures such as sealing exposed wood and applying protective finishes.
