RABIES ALERT: On Sunday, March 8, 2026, an ACCGov Animal Services Department officer responded to a call of a cat that was behaving aggressively in the area of Westwood Avenue in Bogart off Atlanta Highway near the Athens-Clarke County/Oconee County line.

The officer captured a domestic shorthair breed community cat that was white with tabby spots. After further evaluation based on its behavior, Animal Services staff sent the cat for rabies testing to the University of Georgia. Testing has confirmed that the cat was rabies positive.

Rabies is primarily spread to humans or animals through bites and scratches of an infected animal. Symptoms of rabies in animals may include fear of water, excessive salivation, failure to eat or drink, limping, unusually friendly or aggressive behavior, and/or other atypical behaviors such as nocturnal animals emerging during the daytime. The disease is nearly always fatal to humans if they are infected and do not receive prompt post-exposure treatment.

Any persons who interacted with a white cat with brown tabby spots in the Westwood Avenue and might have been exposed to the rabies virus should contact a healthcare provider for guidance. Owners of pets that had any similar interactions should contact their veterinarian for further guidance.

Pet owners should be sure that their pets are current on rabies vaccinations. Residents who ever observe stray animals or wildlife acting in an aggressive, sick, or unusual manner should report it to the Animal Services Department at 706-613-3540 or call 911 in an emergency situation.

For more information about rabies, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at www.cdc.gov/rabies or the Georgia Department of Public Health’s website at dph.georgia.gov/environmental-health/rabies.

The Georgia Poison Center is also available for rabies consultation 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 800-282-5846 statewide. https://www.cdc.gov/rabies

Birds of prey, including vultures, are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Bald and golden eagles receive additional protection under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.

This photo was shared with our team by a contact in South Carolina. The vulture has been shot with an arrow that remains lodged in his body. He has reportedly been seen in this condition for at least two weeks, left to suffer, left to starve.

We’ve also had multiple recent cases in Georgia involving birds of prey being shot.

This is illegal.

All raptors, (eagles, hawks, owls, falcons, osprey, and vultures), are federally protected. Violations can result in federal fines and possible jail time. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service investigates these cases and sometimes offers rewards for information leading to convictions.

If you have information about the illegal shooting of a raptor, report it to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service or your state wildlife agency. Better yet, report it to both. Call 1-844-FWS-TIPS (397-8477) or email [email protected]

We live in a world full of cameras and watchful neighbors but that’s not the real reason not to do this. The real reason is simple: it’s wrong.

If you’re experiencing conflicts with birds of prey around livestock, there are legal and effective deterrent options. And as for vultures? They usually eat what’s already dead. They are literally nature’s cleanup crew.

We can, and must, do better.

🌾 For Our Sweet Mable 🌾

Mable is one of our older mares, and with age comes a few special needs. She’s prone to choke, so instead of regular hay, she does best on chopped alfalfa to help her eat safely and comfortably.

It’s a bit more of an investment than standard hay, but our senior girls are worth the extra care. 💚

If anyone ever prefers to support by purchasing feed directly instead of sending a monetary donation, this is what Mable uses:

We’re so grateful for the community that helps us give horses like Mable the comfort they deserve in their golden years. There’s something really special about watching an older mare enjoy her dinner without worry.

Thank you for being part of that. 🐴✨

🚨 WEEKLY FEED FUNDRAISER — MOVING TO WEDNESDAYS 🚨
$190 recieved of $750 needed.
DONORS: Kelli, Linda, Renee

We did not meet last week’s feed fundraiser… and I need to be completely honest, this is the one we cannot miss.

This is our largest weekly expense.

To feed 28 horses costs over $1,000 every single week including hay and grain. We personally cover the overage, but we HAVE to meet the $750 weekly goal in order for us to survive too.

Feed is not optional.
Hay is not optional.
Supplements are not optional.

So we’re moving this fundraiser to Wednesdays instead of Fridays to give it the attention it truly deserves.

If you can commit to donating weekly toward this bill, Venmo and PayPal both allow you to schedule automatic weekly donations. Even $5 a week makes a difference. When 150 people give $5, that’s $750.

It truly adds up.

This rescue only works because of community. And the horses eat because of YOU.

If you’re able, please consider becoming a weekly feed supporter. 💛
