When wear is expensive, laser cladding can be a game changer. 🔥

Laser hardfacing applies a harder, tougher material to a base metal to improve wear performance and extend service life.

A thick layer (3 mm or 1/8 in.) of coating is applied to the surface of equipment to provide a corrosion – and erosion – resistant surface.

The result? Less waste. Longer-lasting components. More value from the parts you already have.

🩺 Surgeons are welding retinas back on. 👀

Yes, you read that correctly.

Resistance welding is nearly 150 years old. It's also being used to reattach retinas.

This article from the American Welding Digest looks at high-frequency welding for intestinal seams, with reported performance exceeding staples, and no foreign material left in the body.

Arteries, retinas, tendons, severed nerves, all with the potential of being repaired using the same process Elihu Thomson patented in the 1800s.

Dive into the latest insights, news, and trends in the welding industry with the Welding Digest from the American Welding Society.

What does electron beam welding actually look like? 👀

Electron Beam Welding (EBW) is one of the more difficult manufacturing processes to capture on video because the actual weld takes place inside a sealed chamber.

In this video, you’ll see the process from start to finish:

🔹 The operator loads the test sample into specialized tooling designed to hold the part securely and prevent movement during welding.

🔹 The tooling and part are loaded into the EB chamber, and the door is secured.

🔹 From the computer station, the operator starts the weld. On screen, you can see the programmed weld path as the beam moves along the part.

🔹 Once the weld is complete, the operator removes the tooling from the chamber and then opens the tooling to see the finished sample.

It may look simple from the outside, but there’s a lot happening behind that chamber door.

⚡ Speed up! Watch this GTAW weld in fast-forward.

The process starts by loading and tack welding a porous metal component to a solid one before completing the full weld. Filters like this are often used to diffuse air into products like chip bags.

"To support the growing needs of our customers, we are expanding our machine shop and strengthening our position as a one-stop shop for complex welded assemblies. By integrating more manufacturing capabilities in-house, we reduce the need for customers to manage multiple suppliers, streamlining procurement and improving efficiency. As our customers grow, this investment ensures we can continue providing complete build-to-print solutions with the quality, reliability, and responsiveness they depend on." - Greg Miller, President of Joining Technologies

⌛🔙 Throwback Thursday!

Back in the summer of 2012, Joining Technologies was featured in the Canadian Welding Association (now CWB Group ) Journal (now WELD Magazine) with the article "It Takes Two: Benefits of Using Laser Beam Welding Together with Electron Beam Welding."

More than a decade later, the message still holds true: the best welding solution isn't always a single process. Sometimes combining technologies delivers the best results.

Not sure which welding process is right for your application? That's where we come in. Our team will help you evaluate your project and recommend the welding solution that best meets your requirements.
