Everything is connected. As we are in the attention economy, you don’t have to be the loudest person in the room, but consistency is key. If you have a website, how are you consistently drawing attention to it? How are you keeping it updated and interesting? What is your plan for doing so and how far in advance have you strategized for this? What are other ways (beyond social media) that you can connect and engage with your customers? Being loud isn’t always the answer. But, being authentic, consistent, and providing value to your customers (what are you really selling?) will create the strong foundation for the network you are working to build.

When it comes to design and functionality, balance is ideal. However, if you had to prioritize one over the other - choose functionality. People often let design completely direct a website project and even completely destroy functionality in the process. Design can sometimes confuse the purpose and intentionality of a website. Having people find your website via search engines and find and take the actions they need to on your website (easily and effortlessly) on desktop and mobile is key. Design is important - but design and functionality should work in tandem.

SEO should not be a manipulative tactic. You should aim to make sure your content represents a mix of keywords and key phrases you are hoping to surface for via search engines. Why would you surface for a keyword if your content doesn’t support that term? Be a rich resource for those search terms through your content.

There are also ways to make sure your content is properly structured and easily indexed by search engines.

If your website is confusing to use, slow, shares broken links, or simply isn't optimized to support and reach your goals- it's not working for you.
