As a parent, you’re always learning alongside your child as they navigate big emotions and new challenges.

Aspire’s parent groups, led by an experienced behavioral health team, are designed to help you respond to those moments with more clarity and confidence. With summer bringing changes in routine and more time together, it can be a helpful time to build new strategies and feel more prepared heading into the next school year.

We attended the memorial service of one of our people today. It hits hard. He was so special for so many reasons. His family loves him so much.

The part of human service work they don’t tell you is that caring about people as people is the best thing you can do, and losing them is also one of the hardest things. Professional detachment doesn’t feel like it applies in these moments.

For humor: sometimes BCBAs use swear words to make you laugh and engage. We learned this persons favorite word was “dumbass” and he could lipsync “you are my sunshine” like he wrote the song.

Rest. You have done so much good.

Thank you for letting us be a part of your journey.

I’ve lived autism and I’ve worked in it for over a decade, so when I say this to parents, I’m not guessing, I’m telling you what I know to be true from both sides.

Your child IS going to be ok.

I was diagnosed with autism when I was 10 years old. Today, I am a therapist with a wide range of clinical experience.

Please hear me when I say, growth IS possible.

Now…when I say “growth is possible,” understand that it’s not instant. Progress takes time, and repetition.

Something else I want you to know…your child loves you and notices the things you do for them.

They may not be able to express their affection in the ways you might expect, like saying “thank you” or giving a well-timed hug, but even if they can’t communicate it yet, your child loves you.

Lastly… your child is not broken.
They learn differently, communicate differently, and experience the world differently, but different does not mean less.

The fact that you’ve read this far shows that you’re a parent who cares, and it should go without saying, but caring is a great first step for anyone hoping to achieve anything!

Learning your child and showing up for them are the things that make a difference in their life.

So take it one step at a time… and keep going, you’re doing better than you think! 🥰

DSS Autism Case Manager Meg Escanio and Jesse Cochran, a waiver participant, celebrated Autism Awareness and Acceptance Day with members of the FOCUS Center for Autism. Jesse participated in an educational panel presentation for middle school students called “FOCUS Autism Spectrum Unplugged." The panel provided information to the students, further educating them on Autism, speaking personally about their individual stories living with Autism and how it has impacted their lives both positively and negatively.

Cochran, has been actively receiving supports through the Autism Waiver for over two and a half years now. In his own words, he feels that the Autism Waiver has “provided emotional support, helped to learn how to use public transportation and to become comfortable with it, to be success at work, and has helped to build on my overall independence.”

If you haven’t seen this, you should. It gives some perspective on how Temple Grandin understands the world and how this unique view has made incredible improvements to humane care for animals. So much value in neurodivergent brains to change the status quo and to empower autistic people.

HBO’s Temple Grandin film was released in 2010, starring Claire Danes, who won an Emmy for her portrayal of the autistic animal scientist and activist. The film follows Temple from her childhood struggles with sensory sensitivities and communication differences through to her groundbreaking work in the livestock industry and her advocacy for autism acceptance.

At a time when autism was still widely misunderstood, the film put a fully-realized autistic character at the centre of a mainstream narrative — not as a tragedy, not as a curiosity, but as a person with extraordinary vision and a complex inner world.

The film won five Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe. It remains one of the most accurate and compassionate portrayals of autism ever made for screen. Temple Grandin herself was involved in the production.

More than 15 years later, it still holds up — and it still matters.

Because representation shapes how the world understands autism. And this one got it right.
