Reducing Corporate Greenhouse Gas Emissions: A Guide to Scope 1, 2 and 3 Emissions As public awareness grows around the issue of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, corporations are looking to reduce their carbon footprint and lessen their emissions impacts. Constellation's white paper, "Reducing Corporate Greenhouse Gas Emissions: A Guide to Scope 1, 2 and 3 Emissions" can help kickstart these efforts. The first step is a critical understanding of the different categories of emissions associated with business operations. Only then can a business implement targeted strategies for reduction.

How Lowe& #039;s is using supplier education to tackle Scope 3 emissions Like many retailers, Lowe’s is under pressure from shareholders and activists to track and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. And Scope 3 emissions, which come from suppliers, are the hardest ones to quantify and abate.Lowe’s has tackled its Scope 3 emissions with a unique blend of education, consulting and persuasion — specifically in a series of webinars for suppliers hosted by Campbell Weyland, a senior analyst in sustainability and compliance for the century-old home improvement chain. Beginning in January 2023, in more than 15 sessions, Weyland has talked suppliers through the complexities of emissions reporting, showing them how to gather data related to their emissions and helping them find ways to become more energy-efficient.
So far, about 160 of Lowe’s suppliers have attended, learning how to calculate their own Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.

Jobs in nature and biodiversity are increasing – here are 14 of the most interesting Dozens of nature jobs are crossing the wires right now. These are front-line roles that will be instrumental in the mission to limit the climate crisis. Many of these positions have been created in the last half-decade or so, as a growing number of companies, in the United States as well as Europe, seek sustainability professionals to support nature and biodiversity. Here& #039;s the timeline for SBTi’s corporate net-zero update The Science Based Targets Initiative this week published the timeline for a widely anticipated, “major” revision (https://buff.ly/4bpmEtQ) to its Corporate Net-Zero Standard, set to take effect in 2025.SBTI is required to review its standards every two to five years, under its governance structure. The net-zero revision comes amid widespread debate about SBTi’s mission and a backlash over a controversial plan to let companies count certain “environmental attribute certificates,” (https://buff.ly/3ygaxkr) such as carbon credits, toward emissions reduction goals.
4 main revision objectives
The revision is eagerly anticipated by corporate sustainability professionals and is based on feedback from stakeholders, including corporations frustrated with slow validation times for proposed targets and the challenge of setting Scope 3 commitments, which are difficult for companies to address directly.
SBTi’s update will address these areas, according to a project timeline published May 9 (https://buff.ly/3yghSAw):

- Alignment with the latest climate science and best practices, particularly the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Sixth Assessment report (https://buff.ly/2VDhZD5) and recommendations on corporate target-setting published by the United Nations High-Level Expert Group (https://buff.ly/3uPmcls).
- New guidance for Scope 3 targets.
- Tools for assessing and reporting on progress, including how companies can raise their ambition over time and how they’ll be able to use carbon credits and other certificates to discuss progress.
- Clarity on how other standards feed into the Corporate Net-Zero Standard, including those from both SBTi and other relevant organizations. “SBTI recognizes the value of working to harmonize with other actors in this ecosystem,” the organization said.

“Any changes to the standard will be made after a rigorous process of research, consultation, pilot testing, approval by the Technical Council and adoption by the SBTi Board of Trustees,” SBTi said in a separate May 9 blog communicating the timeline (https://sciencebasedtargets.org/news/sbti-releases-plans-for-the-corporate-net-zero-standard-major-revision). Feedback welcome, but hold the complaints
Another factor affecting the timing of the revision: Many companies with validated science-based targets — although not necessarily net-zero ones — are “approaching the end of their first target cycle in 2025,” SBTi said. https://buff.ly/4bz0PrH

DOE unveils $4.5 billion for future transmission projects The Department of Energy (DOE) announced 10 potential corridors for new high-voltage transmission lines (https://buff.ly/3wFegrf) on May 8, designed to bring renewable energy from areas where it’s generated to centers of demand and to provide stability to local grids. The locations of the proposed lines were chosen to help update the grid for the energy transition (https://buff.ly/3fiYxmN) by mitigating the risk of supply interruptions from intermittent wind and solar power.

"At more than a century old, our power grid is showing its age," said Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm in a statement released by DOE (https://buff.ly/3wFegrf). Granholm has the authority to designate each corridor as a National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor (NIETC) under the amended Federal Power Act, in the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. That authority was first established under the 2005 Energy Policy Act. (https://buff.ly/4bcrIBU.)
If the lines get built, they'll give business leaders and sustainability professionals seeking to decarbonize their electricity greater grid reliability and more choice, by bringing renewable energy generated in remote areas to where companies need it.

Corporations buy into sustainable fuel certificates to address air travel emissions As the aviation industry searches for ways to fly net-zero planes, corporations are seeking ways to reduce, or offset, the carbon footprint of their business travel. Boston Consulting Group is the latest company to reach for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) certificates, which it hopes will boost demand for lower-carbon sources and reduce the effects of its jetsetting employees’ emissions in the process. The firm announced on May 7 that it would buy SAF certificates equivalent to more than half of its carbon emissions from employee air travel in 2023. The five-year contract with World Energy will deliver CO2 emissions reductions of 100,000 metric tons, about as many as it takes to fly “177,000 economy-class passengers round trip between Boston and London,” according to BCG.

Biden looks to lower the carbon footprint of business travel U.S. airlines use sustainable fuel in less than 0.1 percent of flights (https://buff.ly/3JO10DF). Yet the government wants 10 percent of the industry to run on sustainable fuel by 2030, and to reach 100 percent by 2050 (https://buff.ly/3wnQwrD).The scale of the challenge is massive: United Airlines used 7 million gallons of sustainable fuel last year, according to company spokesman Sam Coleman. "That was a threefold increase from the year before, which is great, except that United Airlines burns between 3 and 4 billion — with a B — gallons of fuel every year."
Air travel creates 2 percent of the world’s CO2 emissions and 12 percent of transportation emissions, according to the Department of Energy.
