It’s weird to share an obituary on my business page, right? I’ve gotten a reputation for being ‘the sticky note lady’ in some circles and I found the lessons in backstory of Spencer Silver’s greatest invention too aligned to not share. 3M’s culture promoted experimentation, the psychological safety to fail, cross-pollination of talent and grit. Spencer Silver invented the adhesive for the Post-it note while trying to invent one so strong it could be used in airplane construction.

He created the adhesive that lets the small, square notes stick to surfaces. They became one of the most ubiquitous office products ever conceived.

Principles to Remember

Do:
1. Show compassion for your boss. Understand their goals and prioritize your work around them.
2. Be proactive and devise multiple plans for how you’ll work day to day as well as several contingencies for if/when the situation changes.
3. Forge relationships with people in your organization who understand your personal circumstances and who can provide options if things sour with your boss.

Don’t:
1. Avoid talking to your boss about your outside commitments. Be upfront and honest about family obligations.
2. Be rigid. Get creative in how and when you get work done.
3. Neglect your mental and physical wellbeing while working for an unsympathetic boss. Make time for hobbies and other activities.

Make it clear you’ve got a plan.
