Hundreds of community members joined MSU Extension and our partners over Labor Day weekend to help release young lake sturgeon into the Saginaw River system.

These little fish have a long way to go. They spent the summer growing to 4–6 inches before being released into local waters. Lake sturgeon can grow up to 7 feet long and live for decades, making each release a small step toward restoring this remarkable Great Lakes species.

Since 2017, community members and partners have released more than 7,000 sturgeon into local waters.

MSU Extension was proud to partner with our hosts and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to make this community event possible. Thank you to everyone who came out to be part of this effort to bring lake sturgeon back to Michigan’s waters.

Last week, MSU Extension hosted the inaugural One Team, One Health event.

The event brought together researchers, health professionals, community partners and educators around a simple but powerful idea: all health is connected.

As part of Michigan State University's One Health initiative, MSU Extension plays a vital role in translating research into action and helping communities address health challenges across Michigan.

The 2026 Potato Field Day brought 104 participants together at the Montcalm Research Center in Lakeview on August 6 to share research, knowledge and practical strategies for Michigan potato production.

Producers, agribusiness professionals, industry partners, regulators, MSU Extension staff and researchers explored irrigation management, post-harvest handling and the new Dig & Drinks educational mixer.

Events like this connect research with the farmers and agricultural professionals who put it into practice. MSU Extension and AgBioResearch work together to develop the science and outreach that support farmers, strengthen agriculture and address emerging challenges.

The Potato Field Day demonstrated the impact of bringing research, MSU Extension and Michigan’s potato industry together to share knowledge, build partnerships, and support informed decision-making.

Want to successfully raise broiler chickens?

Broiler University is a five-session Zoom series for youth and adults interested in raising broiler chickens at home.

The course covers housing, nutrition, sourcing and incubation, health and biosecurity, and farm business management and marketing. Understanding these topics can help you make informed decisions that support the health and well-being of your chickens while also helping you practice responsible poultry management around your home and family.

Good animal health and good management go hand in hand with human health. Learning about proper housing, nutrition, disease prevention and biosecurity can help you reduce health risks and create a healthier environment for both your birds and the people caring for them.

Sessions begin September 2 and continue every other Wednesday through October 28 at 7 p.m.

We're working with communities across Michigan to expand access to welcoming spaces for breastfeeding.

At the Davison Farmers Market, MSU Extension partnered with the Genesee County WIC office to create a dedicated breastfeeding tent, giving families a comfortable place to breastfeed while enjoying the market.

This community partnership is one example of how local organizations can work together to make breastfeeding more accessible in public spaces.

Protecting Michigan starts in your own backyard.

The Spotted lanternfly is an invasive insect that can gather in large numbers around homes, landscapes and outdoor living spaces. These pests feed on plants and produce honeydew, which can leave surfaces sticky, attracting insects like wasps. It can also contribute to mold growth.

Beyond being a nuisance, spotted lanternflies threaten vineyards, orchards and other agricultural crops across the region.

Places like the Michigan 4-H Children's Gardens at MSU help inspire curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning.
