Oftentimes I hear people say, “you really need to take care of yourself.” For a long time, I didn’t actually know what that entailed, but I’ve recently realized that self-care can be anything that brings you peace and reassurance.Self-care comes in many different fonts for me. When I’m stressed, sometimes I like to turn off my brain and read. I know that sounds contradicting, but the quality of the things I am reading is not the best....

Happy Film Friday! I recently rewatched Soul. The first time, it didn’t leave a lasting impression. It wasn’t that I disliked the film; it just faded from my memory and echoed a significance I didn’t grasp. The second time was different. I’m not sure what changed. Maybe I’ve been reflecting on my own life more and whether I’m living my life as intended....

To me, community is support, comfort, and safety. As a Staff Assistant at the Community Programs Office I find myself advocating for services that support students, help them feel safe, and advocate for spaces that provide safety. One way I have demonstrated leadership and service to my community is by making the free resources we offer known to classmates. Whenever it is midterm season or we have a group project for a class....

Census.gov states that as of 2022, Latinos make up 13% of Kansas’s population. That is a 3% increase since 2010 according to the Topeka Capital Journal. This gradual increase reflects my own experience growing up in a Latino enclave within the state of Kansas. Our neighborhood was a vibrant pocket of cultural heritage, with a carniceria down the street from my house and a school predominantly Latino....

After choosing to commute my first year and not being moved off the waitlist to dorm my second year, it was really tough for me to even try to make connections on campus. I would not talk to anyone at all and just go straight home after my classes. This year, I decided to apply to CPO and it has really changed the connection I have with my community....

Throughout my journey of demonstrating leadership and serving my community, I have actively participated in various initiatives that have made a positive impact on those around me. To me, community means being surrounded by people, spaces, and environments where you truly feel seen and deeply understood. It's a gathering of people who share common goals and visions, coming together to create a place where we all feel a genuine sense of belonging and support. As a 20-year-old Black, Samoan, and Chinese bisexual individual from a long line of poverty, I belong to multiple communities....

Personally, community is the intersection between feelings of belonging and infrastructure that aims to bring individuals together. I would define my community as the Asian American and q***r communities. I view writing as a tool for social change which is why I focus on social inequities in my journalism and creative work. I attempt to highlight underrepresented narratives from my community, especially by amplifying the voices of those who live within the margins of the margins....
