Sometimes You Need to Leave the Business to Improve It

This week, I'll be headed to Orlando for the Gold Crown Mastermind, hosted by Ron Sheetz and Pete Lillo.

Pete happens to be one of Dan Kennedy's longtime friends and former business partners.

I've drastically reduced my travel over the past couple of years. Honestly, I like being home.

But every once in a while... You need to get out of the day-to-day and get into a room with people who challenge your thinking.

That's where breakthroughs happen.

One thing I especially appreciate about this group is that it's a true mastermind—the way Dan Kennedy originally envisioned and ran them for years.

Most "masterminds" today are really coaching groups. One person teaches. Everyone else listens.

That's valuable...

But it's not the same.

A real mastermind is peer-to-peer.

Everyone contributes.

Everyone leaves smarter than they arrived.

And between us... I honestly think it's the highest value-to-investment ratio of any group I've ever been part of. It's probably priced way too cheap. (Just don't tell Ron I said that.)

I have a theory.

Every time you make a big move forward in your business...

The universe pushes back.

Not because you're wrong.

Because you're being tested.

I've seen it happen too many times to ignore.

Whenever we make a difficult decision, invest heavily in growth, or simplify the business, something always seems to happen immediately afterward that makes you question whether you made the right choice.

Last week was no exception.

Behind the scenes at Jurassic Marketing, we made some very difficult staffing decisions after seeing a slowdown trend that couldn't be ignored.

Those decisions are never easy.

Before we wrapped up the meeting, I told the team:

"Watch... something is going to happen next week that makes us question everything we just decided."

Sure enough... It did.

Right on Cue...

Our mail volume unexpectedly spiked.

Not a little.

A lot.

Then, to make things even more interesting, one of our team members was unexpectedly out the entire week due to a death in the family.

So there we were...

Less capacity.

More work.

Exactly the kind of situation that makes you second-guess difficult decisions.

But something different happened.

The team stepped up.

People jumped into roles that weren't "their job."

Everyone pitched in.

Even yours truly found himself stuffing letters and hand-applying stamps to envelopes. (It's been a minute since I've done that.)

And you know what?

We got it done.

Not without stress and sweat.

But successfully.

Now we've proven something to ourselves.

We don't need to fear the test.

We just need to pass it.

And now that we've done that...

I'm more excited than ever about what's ahead.

We've simplified.

We've become leaner.

We've become stronger.

Now it's time to grow again.

If you're facing resistance right now...

Good.

It probably means you're moving.

Don't confuse obstacles with stop signs.

Sometimes they're simply proof you're headed in the right direction.

Just keep swimming.
