Today I completed the last of the 3 part resume workshop with MS.935 a school with passionate and dedicated educators and bright, innovative, and personable students! I truly enjoyed working on resumes with the 8th grade classes. Pushing them to think about their future goals, discussing professional email addresses, and skills allowed them to think beyond the typical day in middle school and think about how they’d show up in the world as professionals. Thank you to for the opportunity.

Preserving your mental health during this COVID-19 crisis should be your TOP priority.

Here are 7 things I’ve been doing during the pandemic to stay mentally healthy

1. Deep breathing exercises- take a deep breath in for 4 seconds and let your breath back out for 6 seconds do this as many times as you need to. I do this while laying flat on my back.

2. Chamomile Tea or Tension Tamer tea (by Celestial Seasonings) Anxiety levels are at all time high right now these teas are what my kids call “Anxiety tea” herbs in this tea are natural ways of calming anxiety.

3. Create a playlist- there are songs that take us to a place in time where we were happiest, or maybe just music that makes you feel good. For me, my “feel good song” is Rob Base “It Takes Two” and my take me back in time song is “The light” by Common.

4. Catch up with a good friend. I spent 3hrs and 48 minutes talking to one of my bridesmaids from a wedding In my past life and we laughed and loved on each other like years hadn’t passed.

5. Watch something that you wouldn’t usually watch- I saw this amazing series on Netflix called “Unorthodox” it allowed me, as a black woman who grew up seeing Hasidic Jewish people in passing, to learn about their culture and customs. It was truly a eye opening and impactful short series.

6. Take a walk/Run- the parks are empty right now, the streets are too depending on where you live, so you can social distance and still get fresh air and exercise.

7. Turn off the news and stop jumping down every single COVID 19 rabbit hole that you find. Having negative images, thoughts and even conversations that flood your subconscious and conscious brain are detrimental in keeping your brain healthy. I know it’s hard to pull away but no matter how many different versions of the news you watch you can only follow the guidelines to keep your family safe. Excessive news intake will not change what’s happening in the world.

Happy Leap Year ! I hope that you used your extra day to do something special, something purposeful, something meaningful. 2020 has taught us that we may not always get an extra day, so let’s make it count!

In a coaching session last week, my client and I discussed the negative interactions that she is having with her coworkers. We can’t see ourselves the way others see us,
but we can take notice of patterns. If we are having similar interactions with different people in our lives then it’s time for some self reflection. Change is incredibly hard, but changing other people is impossible. We are the change that we want to see in the world and in our interactions. It all begins and ends with you. Take a moment and ask yourself how you show up at work. It’s the beginning of a new week. A new month. You have an opportunity to do something new.
