Last week’s classes, we welcomed back Sharon Macklin, who taught both part 1 and part 2 of the "Race, Socioeconomics, and Advocacy" workshops! Our Scholars engaged in an open discussion on being a person of color/ first-generation, low-income college student. It was an overall empowering conversation surrounding modern-day racism/stereotypes, understanding associations between race and socioeconomic status, and the importance of advocacy. We discussed the pros and cons of attending a PWI and explored how we see ourselves in these spaces.

Our Scholars were able to share, learn and laugh! 💥

Thanks to our volunteers who shared with our Scholars what it means to Be a POC at a PWI.

Most of our Scholars are preparing for the next step in their academic careers, which means it's important for them to learn what it's like on a college campus. This workshop spoke about being a person of color at a predominantly White institution and how to navigate that authentically.

We are in need of volunteers who would share their time with our Scholars at our Virtual Flex Day sessions. ⠀

These flex sessions are an opportunity for our Scholars to receive assistance and guidance through the college and scholarship application process. Flex sessions are hosted every other Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:00 PM starting on September 20, 2022.⠀

The ideal volunteer should have experience or general reading and editing skills and familiarity with the college and scholarship application process.⠀

For more details on how to volunteer, contact our Program Manager: [email protected]. ⠀
